About seventy years ago a young man of strong physique and prepossessing appearance arrived at New Orleans.

As we sat over our after-dinner coffee and cigars in the major's cosy library, one evening last winter, I discovered my host to be in a reminiscent mood, and ventured to ask him a question that I had frequently meditated. He smiled and was silent for a moment before answering.
And then the murders began.
When I met Taylor at the club the other night, he looked so cheerful I scarcely knew him.
And then the murders began.
Two names were used for the only girl at Overlook. In addressing her, the men of the place always said "Miss Warriner."
And then the murders began.

I just got that one, from A Wrinkle in Time!I like the "dark and stormy night" one. How many books really begin with that line, anyway?
The best one so far is Danny, Champion of the World: When I was four months old, my mother died suddenly and my father was left to look after me all my himself. And then the murders began.
