This 1845 publication, written by a prominent reformer of the day, argues against capital punishment from several perspectives, including historical, philosophical and biblical arguments. It is broken into 3 chapters: Expediency, Justice, and Sacred Scriptures (although it has Scripture references peppered throughout).
"If it shall thus be the means of helping on in a humble way the progress of that humane reform whose principles it advocates; and of hastening, however little, the coming of that time, when the penal statutes of a "christian" and "civilized people," shall have ceased to be written in blood, I shall be richly repaid for the time and labor spent upon this task." ( TriciaG and the Author)
NOTE TO READERS: Please ask if you have any problems figuring out how to say the Bible references.
How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording Save files as
128 kbps MP3
deathpenalty_##_burleigh_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. deathpenalty_01_burleigh_128kb.mp3)
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
Still no takers?
Well, let me start with the Preface and section 1 -- about 3,000 words it looks like. It'll be a few weeks before I can get to them both, but I'll get the preface in which is short.
I'm a little confused by the after recording instructions:
Do we show only the section number and not the chapter number, or both? If I just show 02 for a section number, won't that cause confusion with other section numbers 02 in other chapters?
AFTER recording
Save files as
128 kbps MP3
deathpenalty_##_burleigh_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case){/b] where ## is the section number (e.g. deathpenalty_01_burleigh_128kb.mp3)
Also, are we supposed to put our initials somewhere in the files that we save?
Many Thanks!

The section number - the first column of the magic window. For example, "Ch 3: Sacred Scriptures, Part 3" is the one and only section 16. This is standard for LV projects.
No, no initials. Those only go in projects like weekly poetry, to differentiate the files that would otherwise have the same file name, or sometimes collections (short story, nonfiction, etc.) - although it doesn't make sense to put them in there, IMHO.
Welcome! I'll pencil you in. How would you like to be credited in the catalog?
From your background, I assume you'll get the tech specs right and not submit a file with the wrong sample rate or a horrible buzzing or background noise. But if you're uncertain of anything, I suggest completing the 1-minute test before embarking on the section, to iron out any wrinkles.
I can get around to uploading an test audio., i would hope to not have any problems with it however i had an issue trying to find the start of the text that i'll be reading.
I'd like to volunteer for this project; I could do, for example, part 5 (p52-61) from 'American Experience' to 'Makes Penal Administration Capricious'.
It'll be my first LibriVox recording, but not my first voicing.
BTW, there are statistical records (as that on page 53). Should I read out those numbers, too?

The page numbers in the magic window are for the PDF, and don't correspond with the text's page numbers. The page number scanned in the text itself is pg 22.
Let me know if you still have problems finding it.

Hmm. It looks like I have to clarify page numbers in this project. The statistics on the book's page 53 are in section 6 (p61-68 from "Facts and Statistics from Official sources" to "will combine to bring about that result"), not in section 5.
I'll clarify page numbers in the Magic Window, and then you can let me know which section you want. If you do the one with the statistics, then yes, I'd like them recorded, as they're a part of the main text.
