The Obscure Night of The Soul by St John of the Cross (1542 - 1591). Translated by David Lewis (1814 - 1895)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-obscure-night-of-the-soul-by-saint-john-of-the-cross/

The Obscure Night of the Soul, better know today as The Dark Night of the Soul, is the distilled teaching of St John of the Cross, who reintroduced and revolutionized Christian Contemplation in the 16th Century. The text remains in print until this day, and has been an inspiration to seekers for centuries. St John's method is known as the Via Negativa, defined in Wikipedia as 'a type of theological thinking that attempts to describe God, the Divine Good, by negation, to speak only in terms of what may not be said about the perfect goodness that is God...In brief, negative theology is an attempt to clarify religious experience and language about the Divine through discernment, gaining knowledge of what God is not (apophasis), rather than by describing what God is. The apophatic tradition is often, though not always, allied with the approach of mysticism, which focuses on a spontaneous or cultivated individual experience of the divine reality beyond the realm of ordinary perception, an experience often unmediated by the structures of traditional organized religion or by the conditioned role-playing and learned defensive behavior of the outer man.' ( Ed Humpal and Wikipedia)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/completeworksofs01johnuoft
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Yes, please. I'd like all the texts in this "CD box set" to have the same Zuburan painting I've already used for Poetry of St John and Ascent on Mount Carmel.

After The Obscure Night of the Soul, we will still have The Living Flame of Love and Conversation Between the Soul and It's Bridegroom. All Zuburan!

I can't decide if I'm going to read Lewis's biography of John, but I've got a few years to figure it out. The only sure thing is... Zuburan!

Sections 8-11 are PL OK! One thing I should mention, we can't use double quote marks (") in the MW. It tends to mess things up when we send it to archive, so we just change them to a single quote mark (').

In section 12, there is a missed stumble at 10:12. Now, here's the fun part. You have switched sections 12 and 13. The one you have labeled as _12_ should actually be section 13, which you announce and end as section 13. Same goes for section 13, is should be section 12. I hope I have confused you, because I am totally confused! (Not hard to do to me!)

ETA: The one labeled as section 13, which is actually section 12, is otherwise PL OK! I can change the file name from here so you don't have to upload it again.

 Sheesh! Right after I joked on the other thread about not working you too hard!

The stumble is corrected, the file names fixed, and re-uploaded.
