The History of Genghis Khan by Jacob Abbott (1803 - 1879).

This project is now complete and can be found in our catalog here: https://librivox.org/the-history-of-genghis-khan-by-jacob-abbott/

This book provides the history of one of the most renowned emperors of all time. The Great Khan. This was a man born Temujin to a clan leader father who was later poisoned. The family was left unprotected and without power to fend for themselves on the Eurasian Steppe. Genghis later rose to power and founded the Mongol Empire, one of the largest in all of history. Despite his great achievement and ferocious reputation there is much we do not know of him, even what he looked like. Historians state that there is not a single portrait of the man that survives to the present day. All current renditions are done after his death by people who never knew him. His death is recorded and his entombment discussed...but all remains to be found. ( afutterer)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/28667
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Anthony,

I'd be happy to MC this for you. I've been doing some checking and have found a scanned copy of this text on Hathi Trust here: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/012189032 (We always have to check because not everything on PG Australia is public domain in the US.)

I'll get your MW set up.

MaryAnn

[Edit: OK, your MW is ready. Are you going to PL this? If not, we'll add a tilde ~ to the thread title to let folks know we're looking for a DPL)

Thanks Mary Ann! Should I use the link for hathitrust then or is the PG Australia text good. I got that in the suggestions forum post a few days ago. Just let me know.

Oh...And yes I will DPL this one myself. It is of extreme interest to me. ?

Hi MaryAnn.

I suggested the PG Australia text to Anthony in the Book Suggestions thread (viewtopic.php?p=1326197#p1326197]), since the Hathi Trust version may only available to readers in the U.S. I think they follow Google Books restrictions if that is where the scan is from. The PG Australia version says" First published by Harper & Brothers, New York & London, 1860," so I think it's probably fine, but it you would be more comfortable, there is also this one from the Baldwin Project which shows the copyright from Harper & Brothers.

Thanks Mary. I will try to update MW sections tonight or tomorrow. Pretty straight forward. Just have to check chapter lengths. Can you remind me again what the length of words should be at max to stay in the length limits for the recording? Thanks.

It depends on the reader. At 150 wpm you can go up to 11,000 words and still be within the 75 minute limit. If you've got a chapter that long, I would suggest breaking it up into two pieces. I think more readers are willing to sign up for a 20-30 minute section than for a 60-70 minute section.

Hi Everybody!
This is CelloMan.
If this book is open for claims, I would like to claim Chapters 0-4.
Thanks:)
