President Franklin Delano Roosevelt thirty radio addresses made throughout his terms as President of the United States between 1933 and 1944. The speeches are snapshots of American life during the turbulent decade that included the Great Depression and World War II. (Summary by Jill Engle)

1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen.Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

   Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
7. DURING recording:
   No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
   Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
   START of recording (Intro)

   Need noise-cleaning?
   Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Hello MCs.

There's some debate as to which speeches constitute the "Fireside Chats" and so the PG book linked above is missing a few that are listed in some other places online, for instance http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/fireside.php. So I'm wondering if I should do this as a project with multiple sources, using the PG text supplemented with some missing from the PG collection?

Also, FDR gave a radio address/prayer on June 6, 1944, D-Day, and I think that might also be a good fit for this collection. On June 5th he gave a fireside chat that very deliberately didn't mention the invasion that had at that point begun. Then in the June 6th address he mentioned that previous day's speech, revealing that the invasion had been going on when he gave the fireside address. Also, the June 6th address is considered one of his best. Would it be okay, do you think, to include this address as well?

Let's start with the PG text. For the others, please let me know the source and we can confirm PD status. The speeches themselves should be PD as government works, but let's be sure about the transcriptions . . .

I cannot find specific information on their website (http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/) as to the public domain status of the transcripts, however, on this page http://presidency.proxied.lsit.ucsb.edu/ws/, they do have a paragraph regarding the source of at least some of the material.

Jill,

Looking further at the Fireside Chats on the UC SB website, I think they should PD as they are speeches given by a government official in the course of his official duties. That being said, I have written to the "contact" for that website to describe our project and ask if they make any claim in the transcribed text of those speeches.

For now, let's include them in the project. If we hear something back raising a question about the PD status, then we can pull them from the project.

And I'll move us over to Readers Wanted.

I'm adding one more speech to this list, that on November 14, 1937. This one wasn't originally called a Fireside Chat, but since that wasn't an official term used by the White House at the beginning of these radio addresses, it might have been merely an oversight that it wasn't called that. It is included by a number of experts regarding Fireside Chats, however, so I think it's worth including here. The link is on the same UC SB page as the others we are adding to the PG file: http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=15499. Will your email to the contact there cover this addition, MaryAnn (not sure if you gave them a specific list or just asked about the speeches generally)?

Larry, please note that the addition of this speech chronologically in the MW has pushed your claims down in the list, making them 21, 22, and 34.

Jill. , could I please claim section 32 (December 24,1943)? This is a week after my father joined the Navy on his 17th birthday and going on to fight in the South Pacific. He talked about the fireside chats a lot and would do an imitation, "I hate war, Elanor hates war..." with FDRs accent. Thanks for taking this project!
