The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years), UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies. <p>

Étienne de La Boétie was the closest friend of Michel de Montaigne and the subject of the latter's famous essay "On Friendship." Here, however, he tackles a different, more impersonal relationship: that of ruler and ruled. The argument in this work is encapsulated in this quote: "A people enslaves itself, cuts its own throat, when, having a choice between being vassals and being free men, it deserts its liberties and takes on the yoke, gives consent to its own misery, or, rather, apparently welcomes it." Montaigne claimed that Boétie composed this work at the age of 18, and it was published over a decade after the young man's tragic death at 32. Some commentators up to the present day have argued that Montaigne himself was the author, and that he used the cover of his late friend's name because of its radical content. Whatever the truth, these words have inspired anti-authoritarian thinking for centuries. (Ben Adams)

Bev- I'm wondering how that happened re: the summary. I wrote the original post up and saved it as a draft and edited it before posting to the forum, but not since. Oh, one quick note on the pronunciation I'm going to follow: there is some dispute on the correct way to pronounce "Boétie." In a well-known commentary that often accompanies more recent editions of this work, Murray Rothbard writes that in the regional dialect of the time, it would have been "Bwettie." Rothbard is a scholar of some renown (though with many and glaring flaws) and should probably be trusted on this particular point. Nonetheless, the edition from which I'm reading makes a special note--which has been followed for many years--to say that the pronunciation is "Bo-ess-y" like "poesy" with a little bit more hiss. I'm going with this choice, Rothbard be damned.

The database info is fixed when you get that project code number. So yes, if that number is there in your saved draft then the info in that draft is what has been entered into the database. It's quite easy to change though. Just a copy and paste for me.

I think i got the edit right at 23:30. Kinda makes the sentence read differently

As for the footnote, I didn't read that one for two reasons. First, it's not really a very important piece of information, as that essay is easier located in our modern age by searching the title. Second, it's incorrect. "On Friendship" is Chapter 27 in Book One of the Essays, not Chapter 28 (which is actually La Boetie's sonnets). If you still think I should add it in, I can.
