The Golden Book of Springfield by Vachel Lindsay (1879 - 1931).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-golden-book-of-springfield-by-vachel-lindsay/
The Golden Book of Springfield is American poet Vachel Lindsay's strange and mystical odyssey through the Springfield, Illinois of 2018, where the residents of that city strive to turn their home into a democratic utopia. It is a "Springfield a hundred years hence," a dreamlike space of spiritual and social awakenings. But when the threat of international war begins to loom over the horizon, the citizens of Springfield must find new ways to protect their city and keep it a "practical City of God."

This is Vachel Lindsay's only long-form narrative work and a fascinating entry into the utopian fiction subgenre that came about after the publication of Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward. (ChuckW)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/goldenbooksprin00lindgoog
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    • "Chapter [number] of The Golden Book of Springfield by Vachel Lindsay. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):

Hi everyone! :-)

Yes, I'm coming out of Librivox retirement to record this. We're one year away from the utopian society Vachel Lindsay envisioned in this book... and although we don't seem to be anywhere near the glistening democratic perfection Lindsay describes, I really want to commemorate this largely forgotten book with an audio recording.

It's also a really, really weird book. Like... super weird.

I know it's been a while. Don't worry. I won't be overexerting myself here. I doubt I'll extend myself far past this project. :-)

That would be amazing! Thank you so much. :-)

Hope you enjoy the wild ride!

(An FYI: I recorded the first two chapters last night, buuuut... turns out my microphone is broken! Whoops! Just bought a new one which should come in tomorrow... sorry for the delay.)

Sounds interesting! I'll MC.

BTW, on Sunday is your 5th LV anniversary. I happened to notice your join date. :)

EDIT: You're set up. A few notes:

1. If any of your sections end up over 30 minutes, you can just use 5 seconds of silence at the end. We've changed that policy, but it's not yet reflected in the OP information.

2. We try to avoid using Wikipedia for summaries anymore, since we make CD covers that we put into the PD. :) If you and/or Dave could come up with something before the end of the project, that would be awesome.

3. ID tags aren't required (not sure if that was in place before when you were here), so I've removed that section from the OP.

I think that's it for now. Holler if you have questions.

Thanks Tricia -- both for the update and for MC-ing! I can't believe it's been that long... wow. I guess this is indeed the perfect time to start recording again, albeit at a limited capacity.

I'll update the plot summary as soon as I can. In the meantime, I managed to squeeze some life out of my old microphone! Here's the first chapter:

Rather than writing "waiting for PL" in the notes, you can just change the status in the last column to "ready for PL". :) And please put the file duration mm:ss in the notes field.

It's been a while - I know. ;)

Volume is a tad low (84.2dB) and should be amplified by ~4dB. If clipping occurs and prevents amplification you will need to use Effects/Compression to amplify without clipping. Watch the video below.

Nice read.

Volume is 85.2dB, still about ~3dB below the recommended 89dB. Amplify will not increase the volume to produce clipping. Compression can remove the peaks that are causing this.
