After the Civil War, Harriet and her husband Charles bought an Orange Plantation in Mandarin, on the upper east coast of Florida, where they lived during the winter months. Over the years they expanded their cottage to accommodate many guests (now a museum open to the public). They opened schools to educate and churches to care for the recently freed negros pouring into Florida seeking refuge and opportunity. These charming essays, each describing a largely undeveloped rural land, became one of the first travel guides written about Florida and stimulated the first boom of tourism and residential development to that area. Stow describes its waterways, flora and fauna, the generosity of the people, the lush abundance of flowers, farmer's efforts to develop crops, Negro relations with whites, correspondence with famous persons, etc. (Summary by Michele Fry)

     Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

New word for me - Chaffer, to haggle about the terms of an agreement or price of something.

I Bing'd "Magnolia, Mandarin, Florida" and here's a page I found with a nice plaque describing Stowe's stay in Florida (nothing on the actual boarding house, probably long gone):

This piece reminded me, I stayed at a 3 story boarding house one summer in Brookline, MS (near Boston). A mansion with 13 fully furnished bedrooms, one central kitchen and dining room, huge library, 2 living rooms, a game room for cards, chess, etc., 3 outdoor porches, a few gazebos on the lawn, laundry room, badminton, croquet, shuffleboard, right on a bus line. It was a very nice way to live, no housework, no chores. $300/week covered room, board and all amenities. That was back in 1986. Probably 3 or 4 times that now.
