Is there any way of knowing total downloads (per annum?) and also which readings get the most downloads?

No, not really.
Over at Archive.org (where the recordings are stored), there are stats for "views". We're just not sure what a "view" is. A "view" could be someone listening to one file in a 24-hour period, or a download of all the files in a project. So the numbers can be skewed.
And they only have one "view" number over the life of the project rather than by month, year, etc.
However, the "view" numbers are there if you're interested. Keep in mind that projects released years ago will usually have more downloads than something released yesterday.
