I've just picked up that the reason ReplayGain is no longer working for me is because JessyUn's file was saved at 16000khz and that changed the rate for the entire project! Good idea to run the files through Checker before editing (although for some reason I assumed - mistakenly it seems - that the PL'er did this).

It's never been an essential for the dpl to check formats though many do. We have always had peopple pling who do don't intend to read or to know any of the technical bits - everything is given a final chek at the cataloguing stage so I suppose it's always possible especially if people have not done the i minute test and sorted out the settings . Do all editors run their files through checker?

Thanks David, this is now in the MW - I'll check it tomorrow. Do you want to go on to edit Chapters 7 and 8? That is, the rest of the Moses story?

I've never do. The only reason I did now was because replay-gain was broken and I needed to find out what volume adj should be made (but given your comment above that it'll be fixed at cataloguing stage I won't bother next time). So I ran all the files through checker to find out which one changed the setting ... In those I had 2 fails - background noise and sampling rate - and 4 with volumes out of range.- From 83db to 93db (remembering that the volume in a parts recording is lower than the actual speech sections due to averaging).annise wrote:It's never been an essential for the dpl to check formats though many do. I was just discussing how checker should be server based and run at the same time as the upload of the file. That would make SOOOO much sense. And there is no reason why technical specs checking shouldn't be part of PL with a tool like checker. I have no idea what the terms mean - I don't need to know. The tool tells me when it is wrong.
The thing with adjusting the project rate is that it is a permanent change in Audacity and if you don't change it back then every subsequent recording is also recorded at the wrong rate. Even the admin's get caught by this (and she was very thankful that I found it so she could correct all her other files).

Ah! Finally realized that I wasn't seeing the entire MW, and had to scroll over to see the Listen links! So, you can sign me up for Gideon. Should be fine. Are you doing a DP for each piece? Any other special requirements?dlolso21 wrote:Larry, silverquill wrote:Well, I'd be glad to help with editing, but I'm confused, I guess. Where are the individual parts?
And, I'm not sure what chapters are being worked on and which ones need an editor. Gideon? Maybe you could suggest one for me and give me some guidance. I've edited a few one-act plays, but this is organized differently.
First look for a section title in bold like 10: Gideon with no reader (i.e. editor assigned to it) and Ready to Edit! in the notes column. So yes, Gideon appears to be a good choice.
The color-coded google document for that section can be found by clicking the Link to text in the notes column.
The individual parts are all of the sections from that point on until the next bold title 11: Samson; for Gideon that would be sections 93 through 103.

Yes, each story has its own DP at the start, as shown in the script.
We are taking out the narrated chapter headings, as the full reference is already given in the intro. I think that's all!

Okay, next question:
Have these been PL'd, or is that part of the editing job?
I just opened up the narrator section to be greeted by a whole lot of red spikes and a Checker reading of 98dB! Some more like 105dB I found a few variations in the text, still probably within the parameters of standard PL, and the is one whole paragraph that is repeated. There is also part of a line that is missing, unless it is incorrectly identified as narrator. It could be a Gideon line, I suppose, but it isn't labeled as such.
Any advice? I was hoping to get a good start on this tonight, but this kind of threw me for a loop. Looks as if this is going to be a lot more work than I had anticipated.

The files have all been PL'ed, but it looks like on this particular one the corrections were never done, and the reader couldn't be contacted, so I think the decision was made to leave the fixes to the editor. They should be all do-able - de-amplify (hopefully the clipping isn't too bad ) cut out the repeat, leave the text differences because they aren't too bad.
There is one missing line from Gideon, which is here:

It may be that Gideon might not be an easy choice. (I thought it better to accept the part and try to fix it in editing than to orphan it completely, as the reader is no longer around to make corrections.) Would you rather wait for the last part to come in and take Jacob instead?
