Conningsby is not said to be his best novel - but has much fascinating political and social stuff in it (well I thought so and in general I'm not into political books ). http://librivox.org/coningsby-or-the-new-generation-by-benjamin-disraeli/

Middlemarch by George Elliot, amazing novel https://librivox.org/search?q=middlemarch&search_form=advanced

For non-fiction I suggest Samuel Pepys and his diaries https://librivox.org/search?q=samuel%20pepys&search_form=advanced. Makes me think of 17th century blogging/tweeting. Very cool.

How about: https://librivox.org/william-an-englishman-by-cicely-hamilton/ I have a paperback version and enjoyed it very much. :)

(and I also second Middlemarch - although, it's probably fairly well known...)

Yes, I agree, though here (US) it does not seem to be the kind of novel that everybody reads (or maybe even knows about). anyway, it was such a satisfying read, I just wanted to throw it into the mix :D

Okay, I have a few. In the interests of disclosure, I PLed or read most of these! They also reflect my preference for recovering less well known authors (and a couple of whom I'm coming back to!). You've been warned.

Marie Corelli, a popular novelist whose fiction often has a mystic element (three novels to choose from):

Constance Naden, an English poet and philosopher:

Augusta Webster - translator, author of poetry, non-fiction and fiction:

The Grey Man by S. R. Crockett. A story about intrigue, clan feuds and cannibalism by a Scottish novelist:

Stanley Houghton, a playwright:

Michael Field - pen name of an aunt and niece. There are a couple of weekly poetry projects, if you accept those for the staff picks:

What's a Librivox staff pick, exactly? Is that like the staff picks at the old video stores?

The staff has picked for December - thanks for your suggestions. Please have a look at this page for the current list. You can also check out our wiki page for a plain vanilla list that contains all the staff picks for this year.

The theme for January 2017 (wow, a new year again!) will be

PIONEERS

I am happy about all suggestions concerning pioneers in any field, whether the real ones that were trecking through Australia and the US, or those on the forefront of scientific research; or the imagined ones who break the rules, are the first people to try something new... You get the idea.

Both authors as well as book characters that fit the bill here are fine!

Especially welcome are suggestions of plays and poetry, as always.

Thanks for your help!

Before Archive.org changed their page format in 2014/2015, there was an area for "staff picks" on the main LV collection page. A lot of people find our stuff through Archive without coming to LV at all. :) For a long time we didn't do anything with the "staff picks" or it was only updated periodically (and sometimes by the Archive people themselves and not by LV), but eventually Availle took it up as her special task to update the list every month.

When they changed their format and removed the Staff Picks section, Availle didn't give up on the lists, but continues to post them in the blog and wiki every month. :)

Openly pushing one of my own solos 8-) "I, Mary MacLane" (By Mary MacLane!) is an autobiography by 'the first blogger', who was openly bisexual and considered ahead of her time.
