Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821 - 1881). Translated by Constance Garnett (1861 - 1946)

Quote:
It is common knowledge among scholars and philosophers that this work is considered the first existentialist novel, paving the way for the likes of Franz Kafka, and Albert Camus. The work is, as Dostoyevsky penned it, written from the perspective of a certain "acutely conscious" man of nineteenth century Russia. This man is insalubrious, curmudgeonly and poor. He kicks his heels against the pressures of society to "become" this or that or to fit the mold of a "man of action," the latter of which he treats with conspicuous contempt and, one might say, vindictive jealousy of the obliviousness of these "men of action." The work is full of black, cynical humour, and is a perfect introduction to to the thought and literature of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky. ( Nathaniel O'Coin)

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I am committed - and not to a mental institution either. (Diary of a Madman was Gogol, wasn't it?) Good luck!

Thanks Diana,

This is me letting you know that I have seen the update!

I have one quick question: is it possible to edit the blurb? I noticed a couple typos. The word "to" is repeated in the final sentence and the comma between right after "Franz Kafka" is superfluous and needs to be deleted. I really should proofread my writing... :)

Thanks again, Tony, looking forward to moving forward with this.

Sure, I can edit the blurb anytime. Just made those changes in the database ;)

Moving us to Going Solo!

Thanks, Diana!

Sorry I've been a bit MIA. My wife and I just found out that we are having a daughter! :D

Back to business: Tony, I had to make some adjustments to the chapter divisions. The first section now has chapters 1-6, and the rest of Part one is in the editing process and be the entirety of section 2 (7-11). If you like, you can just spot check the intro and then skip to about 22min in, as the first two chapters were PL Ok, save the intro.

Thanks for your patience!

Hey Diana, I can't seem to access the BC dashboard. It says I do not have permission. Could you possibly look into that, please?

Thanks,

Nathaniel

Congratulations!!

As for the MW, you are added as BC, so you should have access :hmm: Are you trying to log in with your forum username and password? If so and it doesn't work, please try to enter only your username and click Forgot password. The system will send a new one by email, you can log in using that one and change it in My Profile in the top right corner.

Let me know! :)

I had something like this happen a few times. As I recall, on the permission not granted screen, there's an opportunity to logout. As I recall, if you do that, you are told to enter your forumname and password. THEN go back to the MW onsite and click on BC Admin - AS I RECALL you enter the Magic Window. I'm unable to repeat the experiment on my machine as I don't have the problem though.

Congrats on your coming bundle of joy!?!

Tony

Nathaniel:

Repeat of I knew they were around 5:05

Repeat of It was not only that I could not around 5:40. Also a longish pause.

Repeat of I know at 6:30.

Repeats around 7:00.

Repeat of You are mistaken in that too around 7:30

Repeat of I used to live in this corner before around 8:15.

I'm posting these by stages as I just lost the lot so far and had to redo and I'm not going to let that happen again. I seem to recall one that was fine for the first two chapters before we lost the lot - however, perhaps I'm wrong. Will press on.

Tony.

Next:

Repeat of I am told the Petersburg at 8:30.

Repeat of I am remaining in Petersburg etc. around 8:45

Repeat of But what can a decent man speak of around 9:15.

Longish pause at the end.

I'll just stop for a minute here because I could swear I've heard these first two chapters before without these errors. Just in case there is another version (there may not be) please check before I go on listening - I'll catch up when you confirm.

There's an issue about the intro and the outro. Perhaps Diana/MC would like to have a listen and give an opinion? One thing I notice from the text is that if you announce this Section as Chapters One to Six you'll be a bit caught when you get to Part Two, Chapters One to Six. And so on. Awaiting further discussion. Enjoying the reading so far.

Tony.

Yeah, please stop for now. I too am sure I had it all edited before the crash. Maybe the ghost spread to my machine too...

I will have to see if I can recover the good file, or re-edit the whole thing before you listen. I am sooo sorry that this is wasting so much of your time. :?

On a more positive note, I am able to access the dashboard now.

Thanks,

Nathaniel

P.S. I appreciate the congrats! :D

Okay, so it looks like I will have to edit this again. I have learned a valuable lesson about backing up files. It seems as though the raw audio file was not saved when I exported it as the two chapters, and when I went to add the other four chapters I blindly used the unedited version as the starting point. I then replaced the first edited file when I exported the whole thing to MP3.

So moving forward I will be employ a healthy dose of paranoia and make backup versions, as well as check for discrepancies in times when I try to combine tracks.

Unfortunately I do not have time to edit this weekend, but I will hop to it on Monday!

Thanks Tony, and again, sorry about the hassle. Proof listening is no fun when there are mistakes every thirty seconds... :)

It happens to all of us once in a while... hopefully just once
