The Ghost Camp by Rolf Boldrewood (1826 - 1915).
All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/the-ghost-camp-by-rolf-boldrewood/

Quote:
Englishman Valentine Blount is traveling in Australia, looking for his fortune. He meets up with John Carter, a bushman known locally as Little River Jack, who acts as his guide. They come across an abandoned camp - what is the story behind it? Whose camp was it? Why did they leave? ( Lynne Thompson)

    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/51011
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    11. If you are a new volunteer, how would you like your name (or pseudonym) credited in the catalog? Do you have a URL you would like associated with your name?:
    ============================================

Genres for the project: Travel Fiction

Keywords that describe the book: travel, australia, mines, gold, bushmen, horseback, abandoned

    ============================================
  • BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz

Note on pronunciation (thanks to Son of the Exiles):
"Wagga" (short for Wagga Wagga, which is Aboriginal for "Place of Many Crows"), is ALWAYS pronounced as though the first 'a' were an 'o', thus "Wogga". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagga_Wagga

    "Monaro" is pronounced "Mon-AIR-o" *

"Melbourne" is pronounced as "MEL-bin" *

The capitals indicate the stressed syllable.
Further questions should be addressed to SotE.

  • DURING recording:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
    START of recording (Intro)
    • "Chapter [number] Part [number] of The Ghost Camp. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"The Ghost Camp, by Rolf Boldrewood. [Chapter]"

    END of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter #, part#]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Ghost Camp, by Rolf Boldrewood. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  • AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    ghostcamp_##_boldrewood_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. ghostcamp_01_boldrewood_128kb.mp3)

Please note: use the section number in the file name

Transfer of files (completed recordings) [b]Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: lt - Lynnet
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

Do you have a dpl yet? I would love to do it if that would be alright.
Thank you

Thank you

Thank you for offering, and no, we don't have one yet.
Before you volunteer as a DPL, I would strongly recommend the following steps:

1. Read the proof-listening guide in the wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Guide_for_Proof-listeners

2. Complete the quiz - it was written by one of our admins, who has a lot of experience proof listening. It shows you what you should and should not be listening for (and over-zealous proof-listeners drive readers away - remember we are all volunteers: if someone wants professional quality, there are sites where they can pay for what we do free 8-) ) http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/ProofListening_tips_and_quiz

3. Download checker, so you can check the technical specs of files http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Checker

4. Find a project where you can practice with just one or two sections before committing to a whole book - that is a big time commitment, often lasting up to a year!

I will add you to the catalog as a proof listener, and sign you up as DPL on this project, but please think carefully about steps 1-4 above.
Let me know if you decide against it or have any questions.
Lynne

I understand your concern, and I suppose you're right, I'll start on a smaller project. That being said, if you could please take me off the dpl job, I would appreciate it. Thanks so much for the advice, best of luck with the project.

I don't want to scare you off! Another of my projects has 2 completed chapters and no proof listener. If you'd like to get your feet wet there, head on over and post you are listening to chapter 1 (so no one duplicates your effort).
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=61897
In the meantime, I can take you off here, but if you're ready before someone else volunteers, you'll be welcome back.
Lynne

Thank you, Anthony. The quiz I referred to was added after you started PLing, but you may want to take a look.

I read it. Wow! That would have helped when I started doing this. I had to come to these conclusions the hard way. :?

It was written by kathrinee, one of our admins who is also a superstar PLer. I'm sure she'd appreciate feedback 8-)

Hi Samuel and welcome
I have added you to the catalog and assigned you section 1, so once your test has been approved, you are good to go. Please be sure to read the first post as all you need to know is there, but don't hesitate to ask questions.
You are free to choose to read whatever you wish, but I would point out that section 1 is very long. I can hold it for 2 months, if you'd rather "cut your teeth" on something more modest (1000-1500 words is a good starting point).
Lynne

Hi and welcome to Librivox!
There are a few things to do before you get started.
You will need to complete a one minute test - this is to check your specs are up to Librivox standards, and if not, you'll be given hints on how to remedy that. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/1-Minute_Test
Please post your test in the Listeners Wanted forum (see the dropdown at the bottom of the page) for the speediest response. Waiting for the OK may seem tedious, but can save time in the long run. Please be sure to complete this within 7 days.
You will also need to be added to the catalog of readers. I will add you using your forum name, but if you prefer your real name or a pseudonym let me know. We can also link to a personal blog or website. If you click on your name in the Magic Window, you will see your own personal catalog page.
Be sure to read the first post - all the info you need is there, but if anything doesn't make sense, just ask. The wiki (see the top of the page) has bundles of info too.
As with Samuel in the post above yours, I would point out this is a long section for a first recording. I can hold it for 2 months, if you prefer to record something shorter to familiarize yourself with the process.
Lynne
