Jane Austen and Her Times by Geraldine Edith Mitton (1868 - 1955).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/jane-austen-and-her-times-by-geraldine-edith-mitton/

Volunteers outside the USA: Geraldine Edith Mitton died in 1955. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, and Australia, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years for those who have died after 1954.
This is a lively and highly accessible overview of the life and times of one of England's most beloved authors. Using excerpts from a wide variety of sources, such as Austen's own personal correspondence and the works of her contemporaries, Mitton chronicles her literary career and family life amidst the changing climate of the Georgian and Regency eras, giving the reader a sense of what it was like to live in her world. A must-read for the dedicated Austen aficionado! ( Tomas Peter)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/52622
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)

Hi there!

Thank you for volunteering! I notice that you've just joined our community, so welcome! :) I assume you've already acquainted yourself with the proof-listening guidelines. If not, then please give this link a look over so that you understand how the process works. Being a DPL is a sizeable commitment, because you're expected to stay with this project up to its completion and listen to every file submission. You also need to make sure the technical specs are always in order, and if new members claim sections and are submitting their first files, you should be able to offer them assistance if their specs are incorrect or just need some guidance in using Audacity (e.g. if they don't know how to reduce background noise or make their recordings louder/quieter). Hopefully none of this is an issue, because it would be wonderful to have someone to be DPL right off the bat! So welcome aboard!

P.S. Though you haven't recorded anything for LibriVox (yet), we do need to know what name you'll be using for your reader page (as it will be linked to this project in the catalogue). It can be your forum name, your real name or a pseudonym. Whichever you prefer. :)

I'd like Chapter 5 please - it looks to have lots of juicy quotes in it! :9:

Do you plan to read the first chapter yourself? Many BCs do (I generally do in my own projects) but it isn't compulsory, of course! I just think it helps set the tone of the book, and people can listen to how you've done the footnotes and things like that.

Thank you, Beth! :) You're signed up!

I was thinking about reading a section, but I didn't want to selfishly claim something that someone else might have wanted to read. However, I do like the idea of BCs introducing their projects, so I guess that's what I'll do! There aren't any parenthetical citations apart from the one that I'm not going to read, though. :hmm:

I've been mostly doing poetry and dramatic readings here, so this will be my first time heading a work of non-fiction. I'm wondering how most people handle quotes from external sources; is it the standard to bookend them with the words "quote" and "end quote," or do we generally just launch into them without distinguishing them from the main text? Since this is a quote-heavy book, I'd like to know how best to deal with them.

As for parenthetical citations, I suppose they can be handled sensibly by prefacing them by saying "quoted from." That way listeners will have a sense of how Mitton went about writing this work.

It really is entirely up to you. Quote and end-quote are often used. However I sometimes just change my voice so a reader can tell without quote and end-quote.

Thanks, Todd

Alright, thank you for clarifying, Todd. :) I'll leave it up to individual readers; as long as quotes are somehow set off from the main text, whether by verbal or vocal clarification, it should be fine.

I guess this can be moved to Readers Wanted now?

I'd like to take Chapter VI - Letters and Post.

And, depending on how much time I can find in my schedule, maybe pick up a few more soon.

What a great project; I'm a big Austen fan.

Thank you both! The MW has been updated. :)

I've also assigned myself a few more sections. Looking through this again, I think this would be an enjoyable project for myself to record. I also have some familiarity with authors of Austen's time, so that's a plus!
