Chapter 31 ready. An interesting appearance of 'Tom and Jerry' in this book dated 1852. It would be interesting to learn the etymology of the phrase.

Aha! just found this

Tom and Jerry is first attested 1828 and later used in many extended senses, originally were the names of the two chief characters (Corinthian Tom and Jerry Hawthorn) in Pierce Egan's "Life in London" (1821);

isn't the internet wonderful!
