Ulysses by James Joyce (1882 - 1941).

Quote:

  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4300
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

    Magic Window:

    BC Admin

    ============================================
    Genres for the project:
Keywords that describe the book: modernist fiction
    ============================================
  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Section [number] of Ulysses. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
      "Ulysses, by James Joyce. [Section]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Section [number] of Ulysses by James Joyce. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"

    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Section]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Ulysses, by James Joyce. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.
  • Example filename ulysses_##_joyce_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. ulysses_01_joyce_128jb.mp3)

    [b]Transfer of files (completed recordings)

Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader:https://librivox.org/login/uploader
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: philchenevert
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

I know that this book has already been done, but I wanted to do a solo version of it.

Hi Amal and welcome to LibriVox. Sure, I will MC this for you and set up the magic window in a bit.

EDIT: I did not realize that you had done your 1 minute test and some sections already. Will this be your first solo? :D
EDIT2: I put a tilde ~ in front of the title; this announces to the world that you are looking for a DPL. When someone volunteers you, as BC, will have the honor of approving them.

Thanks a lot.

Yes I have done a few chapters before, and yes this will be my first solo.

I know it is quit ambitious, but I think I will be giving myself ample time.

Thanks.

Nothing wrong with ambition! That is how things get done and you will have ample time.
Our wiki has information on being a soloist and managing the Magic Window because as soloist you are also the Book Coordinator or BC and have the responsibility of taking care of the Magic Window. This means putting in the titles, posting your recording links and things like that.
Also the solo template has great information to help.

Note that I have modified the file name you will be naming your files, please follow this exactly. The template does not do this automatically.
Also keep sections to less than 70 minutes. In noticed that all earlier versions of Ulysses were group recordings and that they broke it down into either 65 or 39 sections. As BC you can arrange it however you wish so let me know if you need more or fewer sections. Image

Thank you.

I think it is better and easier to manage to have 3000 word length sections.

I will try to familiarize myself with Book coordination since I am new at it. Thank you for the tip about the Wiki link!

I think my sections will not exceed 15 minutes since they will only be 3000 words per section.

I will let you know if I want to change that. Thank you very much for your help.

It might help if you set up the first 10 or so sections so interested proof listeners can see the section/chapter titles.

Even if you can't find a DPL for a bit please consider starting. Of course you have every right to wait if you like. I can't DPL, as I have a number of other commitments. When I have free time I prowl the forums looking for the ~ and an available chapter or two to listen too. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Enjoy your solo!

I don't know why I hadn't thought of that LOL. Thank you guys for suggesting it.

I will get to recording as soon as possible. I'll wait a few more days though since I am expected my new mic to arrive anytime now and I don't want to the book to have varying sound qualities.

I finally got my mic and started recording.

Section 1 done

I am planning to submit 1-2 of these a week, or more if I can depending on my busy schedule.

Thank you all again for helping

Great! We are here for you. :D

Congratulations on getting started! That's always the hardest part.

PL notes for section 1:

Intro you say section 1. The initial post says chapter so I was expecting to hear, part 1, chapter 1. You can change the recording or the initial post depending on which way you prefer it.

10:39 Duplicate “his arm”

Ending: Section v. chapter. Also, only the final chapter will close with “End of Ulysses, by James Joyce.”

Noise in opening and ending silence.

You have numerous mouse clicks throughout the recording. I’m not sure if you remembered to noise clean. I used the ending silence as a noise profile and cleaned the section. The mouse click issue was improved after that. While mouse clicks can be edited out it would be dreadfully time-consuming. Possibly, by listening to the ones noted, you can see a pattern for how you record and modify your recording style slightly to eliminate them.
I’ve noted the most noticeable mouse clicks 4:38, 4:40, 5:05, 5:08, 5:16, 5:22, 5:33, 6:31, 6:41, 6:53, 7:10, 7:39, 7:43, 7:48, 8:02, 8:14, 8:36, 8:40, 8:50, 9:35, 10:15, 10:36, 11:14, 11:26, 11:39, 12:06, 12:25, 12:51, 13:01, 13:05, 13:35, 13:37, 13:49, 14:11, 14:14, 14:35, 14:47, 14:54, 14:56, 14:57, 14:59, 15:04, 15:15, 15:22, 15:31, 15:40, 15:44, 15:50, 15:59, 16:14, 16:28, 16:48, 16:53, 16:58, 17:10, 17:19, 17:49, 18:00, 18:02, 18:09, 18:20, 18:25, 18:30, 18:37, 18:48, 19:00, 19:07, 19:27, 19:33, 19:59.
