Mary's Grammar: Interspersed with Stories and Intended for the Use of Children by Jane Marcet (1769 - 1858).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/marys-grammar-by-jane-marcet/

Quote:
Mary's teacher has taxed her with the task of learning that most onerous of all parts of the English language: Grammar. Through stories and practical exercises, Mary's mother shows her that it's really not as hard as she thinks. Join us on this delightful journey as Mary learns her Grammar. ( Jennifer Dallman)

  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=chi.40383024;view=1up;seq=5
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Thanks Anne! Do you think we should make the title just Mary's Grammar, the file names will be quite long.

Yup , I changed the filenames -. We'll leave the full name in the database unless we change our minds later :D , but I shortened the thread heading so my initials would fit

Over to you -what I've read so far looks interesting and informative.

That's terrific, thanks! I'll start on it in a few days, will we be leaving it here to see if we can snag a dedicated listener?

Here are the first two recordings:

Preface

A note on the preface: the entire preface is not on the archive.org version, the first page of it is cut off. I have used Google's version for just the preface: https://books.google.com/books?id=HJhfNYi3iDQC&pg=PR3&lpg=PR3&dq=marys+grammar+preface&source=bl&ots=o8E6RW81g0&sig=SgDKvG-tFUWVlwGpyVTMolZFnDo&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjbzYPF3NTMAhWGaD4KHSndDrgQ6AEIHzAB#v=onepage&q=marys%20grammar%20preface&f=false

Setions 0 and 1 are PL OK! Hehe, I bet everyone would like to be taught grammar in this way, sort of "this is too difficult, let's just skip over it" ;) Great reading!

I know, but I think her mother might be wise to get her to a lesson she would understand, and then expand from there! :)

:help: Okay, I have a little question/concern - in the Internet Archive, there are big gaps, whole pages missing in it, which are intact in the Google E-book. The Google E-book is a newer version 1870 verses the 1835 edition we're currently working from. The 1870 version is revised and expanded, so here is my question: If we switch over the 1870 version, is that going to be an issue since I know that sometimes people can't view the Google texts? If we do switch, I'll need to check on the nouns chapter, as there may be additional paragraphs that are not in the older version. I'm perfectly fine doing that, as I really don't see how else we can do it since the IA version isn't complete.

I had a look at Archive to see if they had the later version - funnily enough sh also wrote Willy's grammar later on so it would be used in boy's schools - but it was extra bits and of course is about Willy and the master not Mary and Mother . She was a busy little bee - lots of similar books abou"Conversations in Chemistry , Natural Philosophy" etc
If it's not complete you'll have to use the Google book and if Kathrine can't read it maybe you could send her a pdf if needed - it would be quite legal , the book is PD everywhere , its just that google can't be bothered looking at it to find out. I send them little notes everytime I come across one but I haven't really noticed it making any difference

Perfect, that will do, I'll update the first chapter and keep working on the next. Just an Fyi, I'll be out most of the next few weeks, but as soon as I'm back and settled, I'll get back on this.
