Micah Clarke by Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930).

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/micah-clarke-by-sir-arthur-conan-doyle/

This is an abandoned solo project, brought back as a group project. Carolin is acting as BC.
The book is a bildungsroman whose protagonist, Micah Clarke, begins as a boy seeking adventure in a rather romantic and naive way, falls under the influence of an older and vastly experienced, world-weary soldier of fortune, and becomes a grown up after numerous experiences, some of them very harrowing. In the process the book also records much of the history of the Monmouth Rebellion, from the point of view of someone living in 17th century England. ( Wikipedia)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/9504
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  6. BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording:
    START of recording (Intro)
    • "Section [number] of Micah Clarke. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
"Micah Clarke, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. [Chapter (if applicable, part 1 or 2)]"

    END of recording
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of Section [number]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of Micah Clarke, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    micahclarke_##_doyle_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. micahclarke_01_doyle_128kb.mp3)
  9. Example ID3 V2 tags (just leave those blank!)

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader
      Image
(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: Carolin
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
    • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.
    Any questions?

alright, you are all set!

now as this is a solo, you are your own book coordinator. part of this is to update the magic window: enter section titles (i put one or two there to get you started), and mabe word counts, and when you upload files, you enter the duration (mm:ss) and the link, and set the status to "ready for pl" :) how all this works is described here: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Soloists:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window

please read that article and follow the instructions on how to get a password and enter the mw for the first time. please let me know if everything works as expected. then play around in the mw as much as you like.

and please ask if you have any questions!

I have uploaded Chaper 2 of Micah Clarke here:

https://librivox.org/uploads/carolin/micahclarke_02_doyle_128kb.mp3. It runs 31 mins. 18 seconds.

(I can't remember if I'm supposed to enter this information in the Magic Window (or how to do that, if so).

PL notes for chapter 1

11:00 Pause before "from here".
11:05 Background noise
25:08 Background noise

There were a couple of places where there was a swallow or you were catching your breath which was a bit long and sounded strange to my ear. They are not standard PL so feel free to ignore them. :D
2:13 before "those scenes"
6:02 between "privileges" and "that they"
10:41 before "there not"
20:08 between "second coming" and "upon that"

I enjoyed your reading. This sounds to be an enjoyable story. I hope you pick up a DPL soon.

Be well,
Linny

PL notes for chapter 2
0:01 mouse click
1:08 mouse click
7:24 stumble on "absolutely"
15:49 stumble on "that I did not"
19:42 mouse click
25:06 background noise. Sounds like a snap.
26:04 stumble on "we crouched behind the cover"
28:51 mouse click
30:47 background noise. Sounds like a single knock.

Thanks for the notes. I'll either redo Chapter 1 or fix the problems. Meanwhile, I'll get some more chapters recorded.

Please don't rerecord the entire section. There really isn't a reason to do so. There are only a few small corrections. I suggest working to correct these before moving on to another chapter. Each section will get easier and easier. A solo is much like running a marathon. You are doing very well. Step by step. Chapter by chapter. You'll get there.

If you'd like I can DPL the entire project with you.

hi jim,

you might have already heard about it, but in case you havent, our servers crashed and we lost a month of data. so everything (literally everything) anyone did on librivox since september 15th is lost and needs to be redone.

i am not sure at which level this project was, but could you please have a look at the magic window and reupload anything you had submitted last month?

also, may i ask you to please look at all group projects you were involved in and make sure your claims, recordings and pl status is as it should be. notify your bcs as soon as possible whether or not things are in order or not. thank you!

Carolin,
I am able to confirm this project is how it was before the crash. Jim had not been on to agree to my DPLing for him so the MW is behind but that's how it has been.
