Hunting In Many Lands, edited by Theodore Roosevelt and George Bird Grinnell.

This project is now complete! All audio files can now be found on the catalog page for this project: https://librivox.org/hunting-in-many-lands-by-theodore-roosevelt/
The first volume published by the Boone and Crockett Club, entitled "American Big Game Hunting," confined itself to sport on the American continent. This second volume presents a number of interesting sketches written by club members who also hunted big game in other lands. Essays include: Hunting in East Arica, To the Gulf of Cortez, A Canadian Moose Hunt, A Hunting Trip in India, Dog Sledging in the North, Wolf-Hunting in Russia, A Bear-Hunt in the Sierras, The Ascent of Chief Mountain, The Courgar, Big Game of Mongolia and Tibet, Hunting in the Cattle Country, Wolf-Coursing, Game Laws, and Protection of the Yellowstone National Park. (~Summary by Michele Fry)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37122
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening!
Level of prooflistening requested: Special -- Standard, plus please read along with the text and note any discrepancies that significantly change the meaning the author intended.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  • AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

  • Example ID3 V2 tags
(To find out more about ID3 tags, go to our wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/What_is_ID3)
Add the following tags to your .mp3 file (how you do this depends on which software you use – if you are unsure about ID3 tags, send me a message). Please mind upper and lower case!

I have invited BrianL to DPL but haven't heard back from him. He was DPL on the first volume, it was his first DPL experience, he did a great job, and this could give him a bit more practice. Let's hold that option open for him for a few days, please.

MW is finished and ready for readers.

I'm a little confused about intro phrasing. Chapter X, Part Y?

My reading looks like Section 5, Part 4? A Hunting Trip in India.

Thank you

No mention of section numbers, please. You should just say Chapter 4, A Hunting Trip in India
If it's a 2 parter, you'd say Chapter x, Part 1 or 2.

PL Notes Section 13, Chapter 10
Big Game of Mongolia and Tibet

Please rename the file 13 when you upload again. (using the section # rather than the Chapter #)

3:41 missing phrase, great numbers of hawks, caught for the most part in the northern portion of the province
21:47 glitch in this phrase: "and my Asiatic one not knowing how to handle our firearms" (still understandable, I'm just pointing it out in case you want to fix)
22:05 missing phrase, as my only rifle was rather for purposes of defense than for shooting game,

Comment: At first I thought it must have been a typo when the text said "He took with him," says Polo, "fully 10,000 falconers", (guessing it must be 100 or 1,000, and probably falcons not falconers) but I looked up the actual facsimile book on archive.org and it says the same thing. I can hardly imagine going on a hunt with 10,000 men. Can you imagine feeding such an army??????

Very interesting chapter, Betty. Who knew yaks had such thick bones.

Uploaded for spot check.

I have redone part of the intro to read as section 13 but I am a bit confused. In an earlier post about two weeks ago I understood that I was to use chapter instead of section? Going forward for my next chapter what should I use?

BettyB

I am going to upload another link as I don't think this one has all the corrections.
