Elements of Geology by William Ruschenberger (1807 - 1895).
The Elements of Geology is one in a Series of First Books of Natural History Prepared for the Use of Schools and Colleges. This succinct little textbook from 1846 presents an introduction to geology. The information, albeit not current, is still interesting and of use as a general overview of the subject as well as interesting look into the period. Please note that some of the information has changed considerably since this time. The author was a surgeon in the U.S. Navy and president of the Academy of Natural Sciences. ( Amy Gramour)
How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.
Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Set your recording software to:
Channels: 1 (Mono)
Bit Rate: 128 kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
Please DO NOT READ the Questions, the Explanations of the Figures, or the Charts. It is not necessary to read the numbers he assigns each of the points in the lesson.
DURING recording: No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording! Make sure you add this to the beginning of your recording: START of recording (Intro)
"Lesson [number] (Part number) of Elements of Geology. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
Say: "Elements of Geology, by William Ruschenberger. [Lesson number] [Part (number)]"
END of recording
At the end of the section, say: "End of [Lesson]"
If you wish, say: "Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of Elements of Geology, by William Ruschenberger. "
There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.
Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
AFTER recording Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide. Save files as
128 kbps MP3
elementsgeology_##_ruschenberger_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. elementsgeology_01_ruschenberger_128kb.mp3)
Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.
Transfer of files (completed recordings) Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.

I saw that title and thought I'd better come here and tell you that we have that book already in the catalog. And then I checked said catalog and found out that the title matches but the author does not.
In that case of course, I'll have to say something else. What about:
Could I read section 8 on earthquakes please?
Cheers, Ava.

YEA, I love this guy, he's so clearcut with his information!
Amy, since I last worked on one of these I went into Luddite hibernation due to computer problems, but as you said it didn't last. Now I'm on Linux and there is a learning curve but I've managed to do two other readings okay and feel safe. My only issue is that I don't seem able to access anything to do with gain or recording volume. So I might upload and be told to reduce or amplify it a bit. If that is okay, I would like to do some of these, I'll take chapter one if no one else wants it, it looks soooo easy, compared to the days of Elements of Botany when I couldn't even pronounce English words after working around all the Latin, etc.
If anyone uses Audacity on a Linux and would like to offer some help, please pm me or tell me here.

Hi Michelle,
I am happy that you will contribute to this Ruschenberger, too. There are three more after this one and then my mission is complete. Lesson One is yours.
Thanks!
Amy

Michelle, I can tell you what I started using (on openSUSE) when I joined Librivox (lo, these 4 years ago). Still works for me so I haven't explored further. So:
NathanR wrote:My first project as a reader - can I take a crack at Lesson I for starters? If my voice is up to snuff, I'd love to tackle several more sections.
Welcome, Nathan. I am happy that you will contribute to the old geology textbook project. Michelle claimed Lesson One already. Is there another section that you would like? Also, it is advisable to submit a test in the Listeners/Editors Wanted forum to have your recording tech specs checked out. These lessons can be a hard (but rewarding) slog so it is best to be safe.
Let me know what you decide.
Thanks!
Amy

Amy,
I have just looked at my section and have a question:
Since it is a start of a chapter (IV), there is a long list of keywords right at the beginning. Essentially it says "Chapter IV; Chapter title; keywords". See page 96 for what I mean.
Do you want me to read those keywords?
Thanks!
Cheers, Ava.

Hi Ava,
Yes, please read them. That is how it was done in the past for this series of books and it works out well.
Cheers!
Amy
