The Columbia Accident Investigation Board Final Report, Volume 1 by Columbia Accident Investigation Board ( - 0).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/final-report-1-by-columbia-accident-investigation-board/
In 1981, Columbia became the first spacecraft of its type to fly in Earth orbit and successfully completed 27 missions over more than two decades. During the STS-107 mission, Columbia and its crew traveled more than six million miles in 16 days. The Orbiterʼs destruction, just 16 minutes before scheduled touchdown, shows that space flight is still far from routine. It involves a substantial element of risk, which must be recognized, but never accepted with resignation. The seven Columbia astronauts believed that the risk was worth the reward. The Board salutes their courage and dedicates this report to their memory. ( from the Board Report)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/caib/news/report/volume1/default.html
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Oh! May I jump right in and claim Chapter 2 (sections 5-7) and Chapter 5 (sections 18-20)? If that is too many to claim all at once, just give me chapter 5 for now, and I'll come back for more later!

Question for section 8.
Where should I stop? Should I stop after saying: "Having confirmed the loss of Columbia, the Entry Flight Director directed the Flight Control Team to begin contingency procedures."? (Seems to be the end of "communications".)

Or should I stop after saying: "The team initially operated out of Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana and soon after in Lufkin, Texas, and Carswell Field in Fort Worth, Texas."?

Or should I stop after saying: "The researchers and later searchers then used this data to update debris distribution on detailed Geographic Information System maps."?

All are on page 44, and I don't see where the other pieces on page 44 are included within the MW. I'll read as much, or as little as you wish. :)

Stop after "Having confirmed the loss of Columbia, the Entry Flight Director directed the Flight Control Team to begin contingency procedures." That is the end of the shaded box that has the Flight Control Center communications in it. The rest of page 44 is in section 7.

Thanks for asking!

Section 8 has been uploaded.

link: https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/finalreport1_08_caib_128kb.mp3
length: 20:50

Note: I have added a slight static effect to the transmission dialog only, in order to make the
whole of it somewhat more realistic (I hope). If you prefer this be removed, please just let me know.
I can and will remove quite easily if desired.

Section 8:

8:32-8:41 - "to the ground station tracking data relay....to the ground station at Kennedy Space Center" - first part is a mistake; should only be "or to the ground station at Kennedy Space Center."

I was OK with the light static. It wasn't intrusive, and it helps differentiate between the commentary and the transmission.
