Be reassured! Section 17 is perfectly well executed, and I am sure that the book will be completed to a high standard. Over the last few days I have had the worry of my partner's being diagnosed with advanced cataracts in both eyes and this caused me to fall short on my obligations, because of several visits to hospital. Fortunately that will be shortly remedied. The terrier, as usual, is living an ideal life, untroubled by any disturbance of her routine.

Very best wishes,
Martin

Okay then! Very good. Thank you so much.
Movin' forward!
So sorry for your partner's vision issues, but so nice it's a remediable problem, soon to be resolved!
My best to the terrier!!
More to come soon....

Hi Jan
I've just listened for a second time to Chapter 7 of Part IV, while escorting Princess Muffin through the pinewoods. You have captured the Prince's tumultuous eloquence beautifully, and so prepared the listeners for his 'loss of self' in the closing chapters. Conventional definitions of tragedy dwell on matters such as the hero's 'fatal flaw'. In the case of Muishkin, Dostoyevsky presents us with a character whose moral beauty was embedded in a pathological disorder which over-determined its expression. So many words. Then the collapse. Because of his damaged psyche, he belongs in the company of Rogozhin and Nastasya Philippovna.

Oh, I did hope I gave him the manic speed of speech that signaled the coming shattering! Thanks for the assurance.
My first pleasure once this project is "put to bed" will be to go back and re-read the whole book. I've loved other works by Dostoevsky. This now may be my favorite.
Thank you so much for your insights and for your attention to this project. I am absolutely honored to have partnered with you to get this book available.
Sincerely,
Jan

Chapter 8

Martin, during my final listen, I felt the tempo was just a bit too fast. I adjusted it -5 and then just sampled it and thought it was improved. If by any chance this is NOT a good change when you listen all the way through, I have saved the file prior to the adjustment in tempo and will load that instead.

Thanks!

Hi Jan :)

First of all, be reassured that the latest chapter is excellently done and needs no adjustment to its tempo. You do justice to Dostoyevsky's talent for working up a shouting-match through a climax of operatic hysteria.

There is a technical problem, though. Your previous chapter (Section 17) has the ideal sound level - almost exactly 89dB. The new section is very much under-amplified (67dB, according to the Checker program). Please view it in Audacity, amplify up to the norm and re-upload.

Very best wishes

Martin,
I missed a step! I always use MP3 Gain and Checker but failed to do this yesterday afternoon. I am reloading it now.
Also, pardon my request for clarification: Should I leave the tempo as submitted yesterday or adjust it back to the original speed? What I am uploading this second time, with sound adjusted, is the same reduced-tempo version I sent yesterday. Easy to change if you will forgive the need to re re re review!

Sorry, I was ambiguous about the reading-speed - I meant to say it was fine as per your slowed-down version. :)

Thanks! :-)
I do have a check list to follow when uploading audio files, but guess who forgot to look at her check list yesterday. (Some man--as in neglected husband--was bugging me to finish and join him to watch a movie.)

Surprise! Chapter 11! I'm making you work hard, Martin!

One to go, and it's a shorty. Maybe it'll go up yet today?! Spooky, huh!

Chapter 10 - beautifully read. Dostoyevsky, almost in the manner of Greek tragedy, uses the commentary of the observing characters to render impossible a happy outcome for the Prince. Very much looking forward to your reading of the next.
