Japan is then affected too, and Australia... oh no, they already have 70 years for everybody dead after 1954. I'm quite annoyed by this!

Not signed, but agreed, I fear. Malaysia and New Zealand are also affected, though they have transition periods to varying degrees. Canada apparently does not.

We were changed in about 2005 because of some treaty with the USA which gave us access to the USA beef market in 2035 or some such thing.
I think books are just sort of co lateral damage, it's inventions and Mickey Mouse that lobby the USA government . Well that's how I read it all anyhow. I wondered how long NZ would be able to stand up to pressure.

Yes, I suppose... I have become cynical in my old age. The Canadian federal election takes place next week. I can't imagine that any parliament will protect the public domain at the expense of trade agreements. What concerns me (though of course it makes no difference to me personally) is that I see no guarantee that the change will not be retroactive in Canada, whereas New Zealand apparently obtained "a clear provision that does not make the change retroactive – anything in the public domain stays there." (That is from this article, so I can't be sure of its accuracy.)
