There are issues of The Fantasy Fan trickling into PG now. I wouldn't recomend an entire issue, but there are a number of short stories by famous authors are are being cleared this way. H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, August Derleth and many more.

http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?347514

Again, I wouldn't recomend doing an entire issue, but there are many short stories that can come out for the short story collections.

The first two issues are in PG, there are four more in PGDP.

Greg,
Are there any more 'little magazines' available with early works of future talent? I mean like literary quarterlies with work in the noir, romance, suspense, and other genres between the 30's and early 60's?
They call me Threadkiller.

There are. Finding copies is a problem though.

12 more issues to go. I'll need some time to work on copyright clearances before there are any more.

 Thanks Greg. Love to look through these and it be nice to know they are PD. By the way, do you check on the copyright clearances or does Gutenberg? I have a source to lots of "Public Domain" short stories but I'm leery of recording them because I don't know how to check the sources. Specifically, they are on
http://www.sffaudio.com/?page_id=41273 . Could you give me any sure fire ways to see if these are indeed PD? (In 30 words or less of course  ) My dancing pickle is mildly excited Image

I file clearances with Project Gutenberg. These are fairly complicated even though they are based on PG's Rule 5. There's one Rule 6 lurking in there. The clearance request to PG for each issue runs to several pages.

Greg. Could I do that? I mean ask Gutenberg to check clearances on stuff? Sounds very complicated and intricate.

They don't check the copyright status for you. You follow their procedure and they check to make sure you did it correctly. They will let anyone submit a clearance request. If you aren't thorough enough they will eventually stop taking clearance requests from you. The simplest ones are for works published in 1922 or earlier. Anyone can get those done. That is PG's Rule 1. http://copy.pglaf.org/ is the portal to submit clearance requests.
