Harper's Young People, Vol. 01, Issue 04, Nov. 25, 1879 by Various ( - ).
Harper's Young People upon its first publication in 1879 was an illustrated weekly publication containing delightful serialized stories, short stories, fiction and nonfiction, anecdotes, jokes, artwork, and more for children. This fourth issue of the serial was published on November 25, 1879. Published by Harper & Brothers, known for their other publications Harper's Bazaar and Harper's Magazine. (Summary by Jill Engle)
This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here: https://librivox.org/harpers-young-people-vol-01-issue-04-by-various/

  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/28213
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Please ignore tags for Genre and Track Number - these will be filled in automatically at the cataloguing stage.

Jill,

I'd be happy to MC this for you. I'm going to wait until I get back home this afternoon to set it up, so I can make sure I get it consistent with the earlier issues.

Thanks MaryAnn!

I have a couple of questions about this particular issue. There are a few spots where there are illustrations with no words that seem to be a "section" of the issue. Is it ok to just skip those illustrations all together or is it better to mention that the illustration has been skipped?

For the song that is included in this issue, I planned to ask that the reader either reads it as a poem or sings it only if they feel comfortable doing that. Is that ok or should I ask them to include the music?

Thanks for taking on this project!

Good to be working with you again Jill.

I agree with you on both scores - skip the illustrations and give the reader the choice on the song/poem, but no need to include the music if its read as a poem.

MaryAnn,

What would you suggest for the story/section called "Wiggles" (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/28213/28213-h/28213-h.htm#WIGGLES)? The text is dependent upon the illustration and I'm not sure if we should leave the text off since it is part of the written work. Should we have the reader say something like "See illustration on Project Gutenberg" or "Text refers to illustration"? Is there any precedent that could guide me? Thank you!

Jill,

I would either leave it off (convenient that it is at the end of the issue) or just read the text. We don't like to add commentary to the audio recordings . . . You can add something to the project description like "See the online text at project gutenberg for a picture of the Wiggle mentioned in section ##."

I'd like to take Section 3. I've already done the recording since it was so small.

Track length is 2:51

BTW, the intro seems a little redundant to mention the title twice, but maybe that's because I don't record anything about "Recorded by"? Just thought I'd mention it...

I will also take Section 8, and will read the Wiggles text as is, as discussed in previous posts. I've got some time today and wanted to get in a few short recordings while I had my mic out.
