Black Beauty by Anna Sewell (1820 - 1878).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/black-beauty-dramatic-reading-by-anna-sewell/

Black Beauty is a fictional autobiographical memoir told by a horse, who recounts many tales, both of cruelty and kindness. The title page of the first edition states that it was "Translated from the Original Equine by Anna Sewell." After its publication in 1877, Sewell lived just long enough to see her first and only novel become an immediate bestseller, as well as it encouraging the better treatment of many cruelly-treated animals.

Although initially intended for people who work with horses, it soon became a children's classic. While outwardly teaching animal welfare, the novel also contains allegorical lessons about how to treat people with kindness, sympathy and respect. The story is narrated in the first person and each short chapter relates an incident in Black Beauty's life, with Sewell's detailed observations and extensive descriptions of horse behaviour lending the novel a good deal of verisimilitude. Adele de Pignerolles has agreed to help me with some of the editing.
      Sweetpea has agreed to DPLing.
Skythrock has agreed to take on the primary role as Black Beauty, Kristingj has agreed to take on Polly Barker and the roles that go along with her.

The casting will be (for now) Gender Neutral, except where listed as male. As there are so many roles (especially roles that are two or three short lines, a lot of quadruple casting has been done, as listed below.

Only two more "voice packages" to go!
Reader 1 will be voicing: Mr. Barry / Captain Langley / Larry / Mr. Bushby / Gentleman / First Driver / Big Man / Mr. Clay / First Gentleman
Reader 2 will be voicing: Justice / Nicholas Skinnier / Alfred Smirk / Carter / First Young Man / Man / Footman

Both roles are all male characters, but the voices are for (preferably a middle to old-sounding, but not picky) neutral voice. :)
The rest of the open sections are for editing only.

      Any questions?

I think for so many voices, 20 people contributing to the final product isn't ridiculous. I grouped roles by voice-type (old F, old M, middle age f, middle age M, young F, young M).

While matching voice type isn't ideal, it is mentally what I picture the voice to be. :)

The format: [character name] : [chapters in which they speak in]

Please realize that if you want to read a part, you must read every single role in the package. Most aren't more than one or two sentences. One file for each character in each chapter they appear in!

And remember! Read with enthusiasm!! It helps to read the chapter your character appears in to know what sort of emotion goes into your lines. :)

Only two neutral roles left!! :)

Male, please:

middle or old M - Squire Gordon: 3, 5, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21 / Old Road Mender: 24 / The Butcher: 41 / The Farrier: 31, 47

middle or young M (think teenage) - James: 5, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 / Shy: 29 / Colonel Blantyre: 24, 25 / Second Young Man: 35 /

middle M - John Manly: 6, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 / Captain: 34 / Porter: 43, 47 / Robert: 26

middle M - Jeremiah Barker: 32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 42, 43, 44, 45 / Thomas Green: 19 / Toll-gate Owner: 12 / Ned: 26 / Dick Towler: 16

old M - Farmer Grey: 1, 4 / Mr. York: 22, 23, 27 / Hostler: 15, 16, 29 / Jones: 33, 36 / Farmer Thoroughgood: 48, 49 / Second Gentleman: 38

middle M - Lord W: 22, 27 / First Cabby: 33, 35, 39 / Jakes: 46 / Second Driver: 29 / Third Young Man: 37

Cool! Is there any certain part you'd like me to read? If not, I could do the Merrylegs set. Thanks! :)

Hmmm :D
Could I read either the Mrs. Gordon package or the Dorothy Barker package? Or is there something else you would like me to read? :D

Thanks!
Rachel

I'm not quite sure what part you would like me to read. I have a rather younger sounding voice, so... But I can try to make it sound like an old lady or something else or whatever.
Thanks!

Okay! By the way, your google doc isn't letting me see it. Could you make it public? :)

I was reading the script, and I found a color-coding mistake on page 48, where the line, "Annie, dear Annie, do speak!" is colored for Lady Anne instead of the footman.
