A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 - 1864).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/a-wonder-book-for-girls-and-boys-by-nathaniel-hawthorne/
A Yankee student stays at a country house called Tanglewood during a golden New England fall. Also at the house are about a dozen children: younger cousins of the student and their friends of varying ages. The student, as much to amuse himself as to amuse the children, organises games and activities and tells stories. And the stories he tells are wild and fantastic. When his store of fairy tales and folk legends is exhausted he hits on the idea of retelling Greek Myths in his own style.

We visit Tanglewood six times during the course of a year and hear six of the student's beautifully told stories: The Gorgon's Head, The Golden Touch, A Paradise of Children, The Three Golden Apples, The Miraculous Pitcher and The Chimaera.
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/32242
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  • The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:

    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:

    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

I've seen this one in Book Suggestions forever. I'm glad it's getting done!

I'll MC for you once you have the number of sections worked out. (We just need a rough estimate; you can add sections as the soloist/BC, and I can remove sections as the MC.)
School fiction: David Blaize
America Exploration: The First Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci
Serial novel: The Wandering Jew
Medieval England meets Civil War Americans: Centuries Apart

We roughly it is...

Once the gutenberg legal bits and the contents are stripped out there are around 52400 words. I read at about 150wpm, so that's about 350 minutes of finished audio. If I make the sections 25 minutes long I'd need 14 sections. As we can add and subtract sections later, why don't we go for that to start with.

I expect it'll be a bit different when it comes to it. I never works out that neatly.

OK, great.

You're set up. I put in "Children's Fiction / Myths, legends & fairy tales" as the genre.

It's a treat to listen to you!

Section 0 is PL OK!

Only one note for section 1:
there is no outro at the end of the recording.

Everything else is good.

I have added the outro to section 1 and uploaded it. File now runs 23:25 (marked ready for PL again)

I have uploaded section 2 (Chapter 1 part 2)

File runs 20:39

I think that chapter 1 will be finished in the next part. We must meet the Gorgons soon - surely?

PL note section 2 (chapter 1 part 2)
20:20 - I hear "as distinctly as if you were not visible", I think if should be "invisible"
The volume is a little bit loud, around 92. Please reduce by approximately 3.

Great reading!! I'm looking forward to next installment :D
