Annual Reports to the Massachusetts Board of Education by Horace Mann (1796 - 1859).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/annual-reports-to-the-massachusetts-board-of-education-by-horace-mann/

Horace Mann is called "The Father of the Common School" and was one of the first progressive thinkers on education in the United States. His Annual Reports to the Massachusetts Board of Education, written between 1837 and 1848, are wide-ranging essays on a variety of educational topics, including philosophical arguments on the role of education in a democracy, curricular matters such as textbook choice and methods of reading instruction, and nitty-gritty details of classroom furnishings and buildings. Even in the much-changed society of the 21st century, Mann's writing still speaks to us, recalling us to the roots of our faith in a free and equal education for all. (Summary by Maria Kasper)
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://archive.org/stream/lecturesannualre01manniala#page/xii/mode/2up, https://archive.org/stream/annualreportsone00mannuoft#page/x/mode/2up
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Your MW is ready for you, Maria! I have taken the liberty to appoint myself your DPL, I hope you don't mine! Per your PM, a slower pace is fine by me, I have had a lot of fast movers here lately, so something that will take a while is welcome. (Not that I am complaining, a bunch of slow movers drives me batty as well! I am weird, yes, my kids agree!) If you need more, or less, sections, you can either let me know and I can take care of it, or you can do it yourself, which ever one you are comfortable with. I will move us to Going Solo a little later today, after you have seen this. Off to catalog a monster project!

Thank you, Ann! And thanks for being DPL again, too!

I've been getting a lot of LV-ing done during the winter when my job goes into the off-season. With spring, work'll pick up, and my LV time will go down. Slower, but steady and we'll get there in the end!

Here at last is Section 1! (Length 24:35)

Good grief! Took long enough to get this project off and running! But we're rolling now!

As a somewhat comic side note: I've found the perfect microphone stand for the new go-mic -- my grandmother's old horseradish-grater!

Sorry this project has been sitting around untouched for so long. Got in over my head on group projects, and felt that I needed to work on them first, as other people were waiting for my sections. But finally here I am back again with ol' Horace!

Section 4 -- (23:33)

https://librivox.org/uploads/icequeen/annualreportseducation_04_mann_128kb.mp3

Reading this section has reminded me of why I wanted to do this project in the first place. For a 175-year-old work, Mann's reports seem amazingly relevant to modern educational situations!

No worries on having to take carry of other projects! I know you are still active! I will listen a little later tonight, or maybe tomorrow.

Section 4 is PL OK! Same old problems, different day. It always amazes me that really never change.
