Leda by Aldous Huxley (1894 - 1963).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/leda-by-aldous-huxley/
Though he gained recognition for his later essays and novels, Aldous Huxley started his writing career as a poet. Published in 1920, Leda is his fourth compilation of poetry.

It begins with the passionate and slightly erotic poem "Leda", which recalls the love affair between Queen Leda, the mother of Helen of Troy, and her swan, Zeus in disguise. Some short poems follow. The book ends with two long sections. The first, "Beauty," is a short collection of vignettes where the author reflects on the concept of beauty through an ideal model of physical desire, Helen of Troy. The second, "Soles Occidere et Redire Possunt," or "Suns Can Set, and Suns Can Rise Again," is another long poem which reflects a day in the life of John Ridley, a deceased friend of Huxley's, who was mentally challenged throughout his entire life. (Mary Kay)
Volunteers outside the USA: Aldous Huxley died in 1963. The author's work may still be protected by copyright in countries where copyright duration is determined by the author's death date. In Europe this is 70 years (unless the Rule of Shorter Term applies); in Canada it is 50 years; and in Australia it is 70 years for authors who died after 1955.

  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/leda00huxl
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  6. BEFORE recording: Please check the Recording Notes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6427#6430

    Set your recording software to:
    Channels: 1 (Mono)
    Bit Rate: 128 kbps
    Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
  7. DURING recording:
At the beginning say: "[Poem title], from Leda, by Aldous Huxley, read for LibriVox.org by [your name]" or some variation on that, adding date, location, your personal URL, etc., if you wish.

    Then read the poem.
In case of footnote: Please read the footnote after the poem assigned to it before you say "end of..."

At the end, say: "End of poem. This recording is in the public domain." and leave five seconds of silence.

At the end of the book, say (in addition): "End of Leda by Aldous Huxley"

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.
    Save files as
    128 kbps MP3
    leda_##_huxley_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. leda_01_huxley_128kb.mp3)
  9. Example ID3 V2 tags (not required for this project)

Title says Group, template is Solo. :)

Aren't there already 2 Huxley projects in progress? It seems to me like all the projects will go slower the more there are, rather than getting one done at a time. :hmm:
Serial novel: The Wandering Jew
Medieval England meets Civil War Americans: Centuries Apart
Humor: My Lady Nicotine

Ah, whoops. Meant to be solo. I'd prefer to work on multiple Huxley projects- I think they will be done fairly quickly, as Huxley is a fairly well-known author, and I don't mind holding onto them.

It is now a group template.

I'm confused ? Is it a Solo or a group ?
Either way you seem to have lost the copyright notice - it's not PD in the EC or Australia

I added in the copyright notice and this is supposed to be a group project. I signed silverquill up for DPL.

I'm surprised noone's jumping on this! I'd be happy to do some of the shorter poems until I have time to knock out the longer ones. I''l start with "7: Sympathy" and work from there!

Warmest Regards,

Sean
