The U.P. Trail by Zane Grey (1872 - 1939)\
Grey's story of the struggles to build the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1860's. Typical western characters, but placed in a factual setting. His first real attempt at historical fiction. The heroes must battle the human challenges of greed, ruthlessness, and ambition, as well as the tremendous challenges of nature, to make the rail connection between East and West. ( Bob Rollins)
This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-up-trail-by-zane-grey/

  1. Text source (only read from this text!): http://gutenberg.org/ebooks/4684
  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

It looks like you forgot the template: please go back to the template generator, fill out the template, and paste the template code into the post you've made. (click edit on the top right of your post)

Hi, Bob!

We need all of the resulting code for your first post, not just the project code. :) Unfortunately, if you've closed the window, you may not be able to recover it, which means re-entering all the info. :?

This video might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNHIKfJml1s

Ah, that's better. :)

It looks fine. You could probably start recording now, but wait to upload anything until you get an MC. Otherwise you don't know whose folder to upload to!

Bob,
I'd be happy to MC this for you. I'll get the MW set up.

Bob,

Couple of things as you start.

I've set you up as a reader in our catalog. Your reader page is here: https://librivox.org/reader/10018 For now, I've used "Bob R" as your catalog name. Just let me know if you would like to use something else and I can change it.

As a soloist, you are your own book coordinator. That means that you will fill in the titles to the chapters in the "Section" part of the Magic Window (or MW), you will post the links to your uploaded sections in to the MW and you will post the duration of each file in the "notes" field in mm:ss format. I've filled in the first couple of section titles to get you started.

Instructions on how to access the MW and how to BC your solo project are here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kVj409nG_E0XJ5UrrcL7EVx7Qyx-2UQ7dbw4mINi3XQ
Now in the wiki: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/BC%27s:_How_to_update_the_Magic_Window

There's also a simplified first-time login instructions (with pictures) here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxWB83bbALTQYjlENGZ0SVJUWWs

There's a fair bit of a learning curve, but it goes quickly. Just ask if you have any questions.

Great. Thank you, MaryAnn (and Tricia). (re: I indicated "no Introduction". Actually, there is a one page quote from Robert Louis Stevenson before Chapter One begins--not called an Introduction. It sort of throws the reader. I could clarify by adding the word "Introduction"--but that word is not in the text.) Bob

Bob,
If it were me, I would introduce the first section as intro and ch 1, and then say intro, read the intro, then say ch 1 and then start in on the book.

Thank you Max. I'll put you in as DPL.

I thought we would hand around the launch pad until Bob swings back by . . .

Hi Bob,
Putting in my 2 cents worth here
Another option would be naming Section 1 'Opening Quote, Chapters 1 and 2 of' ...etc.
Since these 3 parts total only 1015 words, it will still be a short file. As an ordinary listener (when not PL'ing) I find 2 or 3 minute files rather a bother, not even time to pour a cuppa before having to go start the next section.
and
Hi MaryAnn,
I bookmark and subscribe to all projects I sign up for so I don't lose track when the project moves from one forum to another, and I get notified immediately when new posts are made. Otherwise I would have to keep a notebook and that is soooo old-fashioned  (my age is showing)

Also could you please remove the ~ from the project title? Thanks!

Max :)

Thanks, Max: Good idea, but I think I will go with the very short file--just because it is my first, and can be a shakedown run. Bob
