This may be a basic question, but how do I read/pronounce sentences with directions like this one:

.."in S. lat. 60° for 400 miles as far as W. long. 187°, the explorers then bore south to S. lat. 70°, where..."

Is it like "Latitude sixty degrees south, as far as 187 degrees west longitude...?
or "south latitude 60 degrees.... west longitude 187 degrees?" Thanks!
