CYROPAEDIA: THE EDUCATION OF CYRUS by Xenophon (ca. 430 BC - 354 BC). Translated by H. G. Dakyns (1838 - 1911)

This great project is in our catalog at https://librivox.org/cyropaedia-the-education-of-cyrus-by-xenophon/
The Cyropaedia (or Cyropedia) is a partly fictional biography of Cyrus the Great, written in the early 4th century BC by the Athenian gentleman-soldier, and student of Socrates, Xenophon of Athens. The title Cyropaedia derives from Greek, meaning "The Education of Cyrus". Aspects of it would become a model for medieval writers of the genre known as mirrors for princes. In turn it was a strong influence upon the most well-known but atypical of these, Machiavelli's The Prince, which was an important influence in the rejection of medieval political thinking, and the development of modern politics. However, unlike most "mirrors of princes", and like The Prince, whether or not the Cyropaedia was really intended to describe an ideal ruler is a subject of debate. ( Wikipedia)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2085

NOTE THAT THE TEXT TO READ FROM IS IN A GOOGLE DOC; THE LINK IS IN THE FIRST SECTION AND ALSO HERE https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RG7sHi5dxbdghhnRD6Nm_FuPxDGommSpXHV6YmFUe_Q/edit?usp=sharing
It is divided into sections so that each section starts a new page. You will need to scroll down to find your section of course.

HOW TO PRONOUNCE CYRUS? Definitely it should be pronounced "SYRUS" as rhyming with Virus. So the title should be "CYRO - paedia"
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

NOTE: I have copied the text into a Google Doc so that the chapters are more obvious. The link to text shown for section 1 (Book I, Chapter 1) is to the entire book and will open in the very first chapter. For other chapters, open this link and just scroll down to find and read the pages specified for the chapter you have claimed. If you notice anything out of order of not quite right please let me know so I can fix it. Please give it some time to load, it's a big document.

This project is divided into eight Books with a total of 41 chapters. I will be keeping to the internal structure here so the chapters will vary in length. This is a great book and needs to be in our catalog. I'll post links to the section text in google docs later. Stay tuned! The translation is a great one by the way and reads very smoothly.

Hi, Phil!

Well, you are ambitious to pick up this project!

I'm pretty much maxed out, but I do have one DPL project winding down, so I could PL for this project, and I could read Section 1, since it is quite short, to get us started. A bit different from The Adventures of Reddy Fox, or Our Little Korean Cousin . . . but, that is what makes LibriVox so much fun, eh?

Hope the project goes well.

That is so nice of you Larry. I know you are busy in real life but as you say this is what makes LibriVox so much fun and so rewarding. You re helping put a valuable book into our catalog for the world. This project is classical (xenophon no less!) and will not move very fast so you won't get bogged down. If there is ever a problem or you want to withdraw, just let me know. By the way, it is pronounced Cyro as in pyro or gyro. I will put that note in the first post. Image

Thanks, Phil! Great to see the spinning beanie!

I wonder if Cyro is an "s" or a "k" at the beginning. I keep wanting to say Cryo is in cryogenics.

You can put me in for Section 1

Yeah, I figure the sections for this one will come dribbling in, but it is good to get these classics in the catalog. Thanks for picking up this project.

Definitely it should be pronounced "SYRUS" as rhyming with Virus. That's the way I have always pronounced it and being the BC, I can make the rules ....... so there! Image And I also have to overcome the tendency to do the same as you ...

But thanks and I will assign section 1 to you. Don't complain if you get hooked on this book. And I will PL your section of course.

Hi! I would like to read all the sections of Chapter 7. So sections 29, 30, 31, 32, and 33. This is my first time to record, so I need to get setup for it. Starting, which mic should I get? I'm a newbie, but I'll work to make my section good. Thanks so much for putting it together!

Hi Emory and welcome to this project. To start, you will need to upload a little one minute test so that we can be sure that the technical aspects of your recording setup are all OK before you actually start recording.

Instructions can be found in our Wiki and in the first post of this project but here is a video that may help too: How to Make your 1 minute test.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlaRY_-bcfs and then How to Upload your 1 minute test How to Upload your 1 minute test

(You may post the link to your test in this forum and I will see it much more quickly)

I also recommend Getting To Know our Forums Getting To Know Our Forums

And how would you like to be credited in our catalog? What name? most of us use our real name but it is up to you.

I recommend a USB microphone that plugs directly into your computer/laptop. It doesn't have to be expensive at all. Most of us use Audacity to record and edit our tracks. The link in my sig has some videos designed to explain how to do this. Ask lots of questions. The hard part is setting up your equipment; after that it is more fun.

Emory, all of your technical specs are fine which is great. You have very little background noise and your voice is very clear and easy to listen to. But your volume needs to be increased a bit ; this track is about 80 dB and we aim at 89 dB. Which such little background noise you could just amplify the file by 8 dB or so but it is better to try to increase the gain going in, either from you microphone gain or inside Audacity.
Or you could just move a bit closer to the mic.

All in all an excellent track; you will be recording in a very short time. Please make one more test, named test 2 or something and post the link in this theread.

Hi Phil,
Here is what I think is a good recording. I increased the volume of the mic.
https://librivox.org/uploads/philchenevert/test2_emory.mp3

But here is another recording I did that shows a problem I am having. It is chopping out a segment of my recording, as if it just vanished. In this recording the word 'thirtieth' is missing. It happens in more than half of the recordings I have done and only after I listen to it can I tell. I've had to re-record multiple times to get a complete segment without this problem, which is not a big deal for a such a short reading but for an entire chapter it will not be good. Do you know what is happening and what I can do to stop it?

Great Emory. Your test2 is excellent. You are cleared for take off and to record as much for LibriVox as you like with those settings.
I will check out test3 later today. Are you using Audacity?
