This project is complete and can be accessed on this catalogue page: http://librivox.org/die-schwarze-galeere-von-wilhelm-raabe/.

Hi I have done a german novel: Die Schwarze Galeere (The black galley).

Thema:

Code: Select all

Teaser:

Code: Select all

In 1599 the Netherlands are occupied by the spanish kingdom and italian mercenaries are flooding the streets of Antwerpen. The people however do fight back. At sea they are a feared crowd, led by the black galley, the incarnation of terror to the spanish occupying force...
The novel is best known for its beginning words:

Whoa! Felix! You kept quiet about this one! :) Thanks so much. This is great! I don't know this at all (apart from the first sentence, as you said); it will be great to listen to it. And someone I know is just looking for German audiobooks, and now I can tell him about this one...

I'll be putting this on the catalogue for you. Under which name would you like to appear, and would you like me to link to your URL?

Another thing: did you write the summary yourself?

I'll be downloading this later today. I'll let you know when I have all the files, but please don't delete until they're uploaded on the catalogue.

Hi Gesine - thanks for taking care about this one.
It would actually be great to have a link back, preferrably to
http://www.fcengel.de/site/librivox
And as for the name please only put Felix there.

The summaries are written by myself, yes. I am usually quite careful about copyright (if that is why you were asking).

So have a nice day.

Don't know, but don't think so... more like 'great minds think alike' perhaps - the English original is by Bulwer-Lytton, isn't it... yes - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_and_stormy_night

Felix - yes, I was asking because I'd like to credit someone for the summary in the catalogue. Many people copy from somewhere (which is fine - usu. Wikipedia) for their intro threads, I wasn't sure whether yours was the summary for the catalogue. Thanks. I'll let you know when it's up and running!

Hi Felix

Have just listened to a bit of one recording, and there seems to be a lot of background noise! I believe it's of the kind that can be edited out quite easily. Did you listen to your recording through headphones? Can you hear it?

I've put the files of the project on the first upload but not yet to archive.org, so it wouldn't be a problem to make changes at this stage. Do you want to look into it? You could post an excert in Help Wanted, or in Listeners and Editors Wanted, if you need someone to look at it.

Let me know what you want to do. :)

Hi Gesine,

I have listened to it while editing and have noticed
a) breathing
and
b) noise transmitted via the cable

Is there anything apart from that I should look for? I have intentionally left these things as they are, since noise of that kind is very hard to properly remove.
I could try just cutting it out. That will however disrupt the flow. And any noise removal algorithm will leave bad artifacts - so my personal preference was background noise over artifacts.

I guess I will make the suggested post to Help Wanted with a small example, out of curiosity.

Does the noise actually disturb you or did you just notice?

Breathing doesn't bother me at all. It's the continuous background noise I mean, and I find it quite distracting. It sounds as if there is a chorus of your voice - several Felixes all reading the same, with a kind of echo/metallic twang to it. I'm a complete novice in sound editing so can't describe it very well - I'm just telling you from a listeners' perspective. It'll be interesting to see what others think.

I could get used to it after a couple of minutes of reading, no doubt, but it would be nicer if it weren't there, that's all I'm saying. :)

Ok, so could you please point me to the part (file and time or something like that) where you noticed that noise and I will have have a look at it :-)

Sorry, I'm not being very clear here, am I? Too many things going on. As far as I can tell, it's throughout the recording. It a slight clangy noise - you know... 'es scheppert etwas' - I'm hopeless at explaining this. I am sorry. Perhaps I'm over-sensitive and it's not that bad, but on my headphones it comes out very clearly.

Gesine and Felix -- I took a quick listen to several points in the 1st, 4th, and 5th files, in case the sound was the dreaded audacity noise-removal artifact -- and I hear no background noise at all, even though headphones! And I'm picky about background noise. I'm wondering if the sound is on your end, Gesine... do you hear it in other projects also? Do you hear it when using another computer? Let's get some more ears over here...

And by the way, Felix, your reading is just lovely. Of course I only understand a fraction of the story so far, but I am looking forward to hearing the whole thing -- over and over and over, until I can understand better :)

Number three sounds a little muffled, but it's audible and there's no distracting noise.

Numbers one and two I hear a clicking noise, it sounds similar to what it sounds like to adjust a headset mic (at least mine). It's pretty incessant. Numbers 4, 5, and 6 seem fine (although I didn't listen all the way through).

Well, the weird thing is that I heard the same thing on Peter's Hanging recording - over at Listeners Wanted. Kara, kri, would you have a quick listen to one of those, too?

When I heard that, I listened to other files I had in iTunes, just to see if my headphones were giving up on me, but the other recordings on there seemed okay, and so does my White Fang recording that I'm just editing.

Wow. Forget what I said. I just tried another pair of headphones, and the sound is brilliant. Peter's is also fine. Drat.

Sorry, Felix, Kara, kri, for creating extra work. Fault is obviously on my end. How weird that it doesn't happen with all files, though!

Felix, your files are already uploaded and will be sent to archive.org in a moment. They should be catalogued this weekend; I'll let you know. :)

*hugs*

Isn't it nice that there's no real problem? Swapping headphones is a whole lot easier than editing out background noise :) If only all problems were so easily solved...
