Poems by Nora May French by Nora May French (1881 - 1907).

This project is complete! All audio files can be found in the catalog: https://librivox.org/poems-by-nora-may-french/
Nora May French was a Californian poet and a member of the bohemian literary circles of the Carmel Arts and Crafts Club, which flourished after the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906. She gained minor recognition, but no financial stability, through local magazines. Published posthumously by friends in 1910, four years after French's suicide, Poems by Nora May French was the first and only compilation of her works until 2009.

Although many of her poems celebrate the serenity of coastal landscape, others are less sanguine. They offer glimpses into the mind of a young woman plagued by heartbreak and torn between pressure to submit to social roles and longing to live creatively. The most famous poem in the collection, The Spanish Girl, reflects on a failed engagement, the first of many. (Mary Kay)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/poemsnoramay00frenrich
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

      Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The new (free) version 1.3.3. of Audacity has much improved noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Hello, Tortilla! Let me MC. I'll try and set it up :D

Since this is a book of short poems, we can use the abbreviated intro for poems (in which case, each poem should have its own section). If you agree, I'll edit the first post accordingly. Is there a DPL?

Thank you for being my MC! I am planning on editing it like I have done my past collection of poems, as so:

For all Subsequent poems
• At the beginning of the recording, read the abbreviated "LibriVox disclaimer":
"[Poem title], by Clark Ashton Smith, read for LibriVox.org by [your name]" or some variation on that, adding date, location, your personal URL, etc., if you wish.
• Then read the poem.
• At the end, say: "End of poem. This recording is in the public domain." and leave five seconds of silence. If there is more than one poem in the collection, repeat the disclaimer and read the next poem.

I do not have a DPL, but the MW is fully set up.

Regarding the Notes, as the last section, I think these are footnotes, referring to various poems, so, if they are to be included, I think it's better to be recorded with the respective poem each time. Like for example, the first note refers to the first poem The Outer Gate (notice how there's a 1 superscript at the poem title), the second note refers to the poem The Rose, page 4 (again, a 2 superscript at the title), the third note refers to The Message, page 6 (a 3 superscript), etc. So perhaps it's better to include those as foot-notes in the recordings of each poem, if you'd like them included at all. You could skip them completely if you choose to. I just think it would be confusing as a separare section in the end.

Regarding the intros, I don't see a reason to have a different intro for the first section. I'd go with the abbreviated one for each poem, as long as it contains all necessary information. Good job on the MW! :D When you're ready with the intros-outros in the first post, and footnotes, we can move to Readers Wanted!!

Greetings Tortilla, Rapunzelina, and Denise,

I would like to help get this project started by claiming the following sections, if I may:
06 - Music in the Pavilion
07 - Rebuke
10 - Vivisection/The Stranger
13 - The Poppy Field
16 - Mirage/Dusk

If approved, I will have these completed within just a few days.

Thank you, Tortilla. There is just one problem: I did not request Section 2, "The Rose," and I did ask for Section 7, "Rebuke." Of course, I will do whatever you want me to, but I would prefer to do 7, rather than 2.

May I request section 2 Rain / Best-Loved iff Len really doesn't want it?
If Len does read sec 2 then, Section 1 and 4. would be fine, (unless i missed someone else's request)

Here is my first recording for this project, Section 6, "Music in the Pavilion":

https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/poems_06_french_128kb.mp3
Duration: 1:30

I had never heard of this poet before, but I like her work very much--very sensitive, technically perfect, and effectively expressed.

Here is my second recording for this project, Section 7, "Rebuke":

https://librivox.org/uploads/rapunzelina/poems_07_french_128kb.mp3
Duration: 1:30

Excellent choice of words by the poet for both sense and sound--from the harsh grating of her first impression of the scene to the beauty of the seemingly miraculously transformed vista. This gal's poetic skills could compete with the old masters!
