Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810 - 1865).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/wives-and-daughters-dramatic-reading-by-elizabeth-cleghorn-gaskell/

Molly and her father have lived alone since the death of her mother. Now Mr Gibson decides it will be in Molly's best interests for him to marry again. The new "Mama" brings to the household many changes, including a glamorous new step-sister. Mrs Gibson starts scheming to have Cynthia marry one of the sons of the local squire, but she does not understand Cynthia's reluctance or why Molly is meeting Mr Preston in the forest.

Secrets, love affairs and society gossip abound in this social commentary novel written by Mrs Gaskell (author of North and South and Mary Barton). Love across the class divide, love of parents for children and step-children, love which is a 'heated fancy', love between sisters, and sincere self-sacrificing love of one person for another whether brother or beloved - all are delicately and delightfully drawn in this masterpiece of 19th century literature, and all are brought to life in this dramatic reading with a stunning cast of voices. (Summary by Beth Thomas)

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (for DPL only!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4274
Everyone else please read from the Google Docs linked in purple at the bottom in the Magic Window!
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I'm not sure that role would be the best choice for you, actually. Do you know the book at all? Miss Dorothy Browning is a 50-ish old maid, and if I remember correctly you are quite young? She gets out the Bible and gives a few stern lectures to the giddy young things - wouldn't you rather be one of them? Maybe a collection of the "maid" parts, and any of the other "miss" parts apart from Miss Browning might be better suited to your voice? Miss Piper or Miss Hornblower or Miss Goodenough all get in a bit of gossiping, or Hannah Oakes is a young mother. (You can claim more than one, as long as they don't appear in the same chapter.)

Then, I'll read Betty instead of Dorothy. :)

Oops - my bad! Betty is also an elderly servant (she has nursed Molly since she was young).

Maria is the fashionable young housemaid, and you can also have Hannah Oakes as well if you like? Or Miss Goodenough, the daughter?
