Emmeline, The Orphan Of The Castle by Charlotte Turner Smith (1749 - 1806).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/emmeline-orphan-castle-by-charlotte-turner-smith/
"This book was written about 150 years ahead of its time. It tells the story of Emmeline Mobwray who grows up in a dysfunctional family and has to find herself against all odds. Orphaned at a young age, she has to stay alone in a remote castle under the care of a kind housekeeper. But when the kind housekeeper dies, the family starts to take interest in her- to mixed results. Her cousin becomes obsessed with her, much to the displeasure of his wealthy and arrogant parents. Thus, Emmeline is forced to run away from the only home she knew in order to escape his attentions. Would Emmeline be able to stand up to him at the end or, like many of her contemporaries, would she be forced into a loveless match? Can Emmeline survive in a society predominated by wealth without money or connections? And is Emmeline's family the only one with problems? Throughout the novel, Emmeline learns to create and sustain true friendships and grows up to her role as a woman of that era- with all that it entails." (summary by Stav Nisser)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? May 2016. We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/41646
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Note to all readers: Emeline is pronounsed EM - EH - LEEN

Hi, Stav, Michele Fry here. I look forward to participating on this project. I'd like to sign up to read the introductory poem entitled TO MY CHILDREN, which precedes Chapter 1, but I notice there isn't a 00 in the Magic Window that comes before Chapter 1. Do you want to add that? Please let me know. Thanks.

Hi Anne and Michelle,
I was not planning to add a 00 to the mw, as "to my children" is only about half a page long. However, as Michelle requests it, I will olter my plann.
Anne, could you add both section 00 and secion 59 to the mw? I somehow misscounted the secionts.
Thanks,
Stav.

How shall we pronounce Emeline throughout the project? I 'm figuring a long I, rhyming with brine, stein, fine, wine, etc. Please confirm as I'm working on the poem.

I'd like to record Chapter 1 as well, if I may.

Hi Michell,,
of course you may have chapter 1 as well.
About pronouncing Emelin... I would go with the way it was read in another project I wouked on:
e (with a long E), me (w long e again) lin )short I, ryming with in and twin(. no e like in (between), in case I confused myself between the short and long es. Thanks for everything and have a great day,
Stav.

Okay, to confirm, would that sound like Ee-me-lin? Ee (as in easy); me as in meet, lin as in rin-tin-tin. And which syllable would be accented? Could you give me the name of the other project so I can hear it for myself? I am unfamiliar with this name.

Thanks for Chapter 1.

The only time I have said it was in an A A Milne poem in "When we where very young"
"Emmeline
Has not been seen
For more than week. She slipped between
The two tall trees at the end of the green...
We all went after her. "Emmeline!" etc . All the lines in the rest of the poem end with -een
When it rhymed with green :D . But it may be poetic license

Cover claimed for Michele and extra sections added

I just conferred with my mother, a Parisian French native, who confirmed the proper French pronunciation as: Emma-leen. I favor this choice, as I just tried to record Chapter 1 using other pronunciations, and they all seem stilted. This one is authentic and flows effortlessly off the tongue, so I think it will be easiest for all our readers. Is this okay?

Okay, here's how I pronounced Emmeline in Sections 0 and 1.

EM - EH - LEEN

I suggest you make mention of the pronounciation in the First Post, as it is the book's title, and as readers may not take the time to read through all these posts.
