R.U.R. by Karel Čapek (1890 - 1938). Translated by Paul Selver (1888 - 1970)

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/rur-rossums-universal-robots-by-karel-capek/

Volunteers outside the USA: Paul Selver died in 1970. The author's work is still protected by copyright in places like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1955) or Canada (author's death plus 50 years), UNLESS the rule of shorter term applies.
Helena Glory, as the daughter of a major industrial power's president, is a woman on a mission. She faces the island factory of Rossum's Universal Robots, the world's leading company in robotic engineering. She is convinced that these new creations called robots they make are deserving of rights like humans do. Everyone else is convinced robots are nothing more than tools for human use. Is it so, or is a robot rebellion becoming a more likely prospect as the robots start to seem more intelligent than first thought?

First performed in English in 1922, R.U.R. is most notable for being the play that introduced the word "robot" into the English language and one of the popular early examples of the science fiction genre onstage. (Mary Kay)

    1. Is there a deadline?
We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    2. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here
To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    3. New to recording?
Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.planetmonk.com/dramageeks/scripts/rur.pdf
    5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Second Play! This sci-fi seems to have been a desirable title for a while, so I think it would be a good time to submit it to LB. I plan to edit and BC, would like another to narrate, but I will if I must. My second play, so no more for a while, as this is my second one in the works.

Character List:

NARRATOR – 1, 2, 3
(male) HARRY DOMIN – 1 (start page 3-33), 2 (page 34-35, 37-43, 54), 3 (66-87) -TAKEN
(female) SULLA – 1, (start page 3, 13-17) -TAKEN
(male) MARIUS – 1, (start page 4, 13-17)
(female) HELENA GLORY – 1 (start page 3-33), 2 (page 35-62, 64-65), 3 (73-85) -TAKEN
(male) DR. GALL – 1 (start page 19-29), 2 (50-53, 54-65), 3 (66-87)
(male) MR. FABRY – 1 (start page 19-29), 2 (page 34-35, 61-65), 3 (67-87) -TAKEN
(male) DR. HALLEMEIER – 1(start page 19-29), 2 (page 34-35, 54-65), 3 (67-88) -TAKEN
(male) MR. ALQUIST – 1(start page 19-29), 2 (page 45-48), 3 (page 66-88), epilogue (page 90-101) -TAKEN
(male) CONSUL BUSMAN – 1(start page 19-29), 2 (63- 65), 3 (68- 83)
(female) NANA – 2 (page 35-38, 43-45, 48, 53-54), 3 (86)
(male) RADIUS – 2 (page 48-50), 3 (88), epilogue (page 91-95) -TAKEN
A ROBOT – 3 (page 88) -TAKEN
FOURTH ROBOT- epilogue (page 91-94)
TWO ROBOTS/THIRD ROBOT/SECOND ROBOT – 3 (page 88), (epilogue 91-94)
A SERVANT – epilogue (pages 91) -TAKEN
(female) ROBOT HELENA - epilogue (page 94-101) -TAKEN
(male) PRIMUS – epilogue (page 94-101) -TAKEN

The gender marks are for the original play only- gender neutral casting as far as I am concerned. :) It was considering making the parts of Robot Helena (Helena in the epilogue) part of Helena of the actual play's lines as a dual role (with a change of tone or pitch), as well as Primus and Harry Domin, however, the parts can be separated.

Excited about this show. :)

EDIT:

The following roles are going to be combined:

HENRY DOMIN and PRIMUS -TAKEN
HELENA GLORY and HELENA (robot) - TAKEN
SULLA and A ROBOT -TAKEN
MARIUS and FOURTH ROBOT
TWO ROBOTS/THIRD ROBOT/SECOND ROBOT

Please read for both if you choose it. :)

EDIT:

Yayyy! We have finished editing and casting. Hopefully it'll be in the archives by the end of the week. :)

According to the wikipedia page, the translation was done in 1923. Both the original work and the translation must be in the public domain.

The translation was done in 1922, as the first English-language performance was in October of 1922. We have already discussed this issue here (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=52060) and I was given the clear.

I saw that you are editor as well as BC. Are you planning on doing the PL for the individual role files as you edit or requesting a DPL for that? I assume that you will want someone else to PL the acts after you edit them.
