The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 by Alfred Thayer Mahan .

Quote:
The Influence of Sea Power Upon History: 1660–1783 is a history of naval warfare written in 1890 by Alfred Thayer Mahan. It details the role of sea power during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and discusses the various factors needed to support and achieve sea power, with emphasis on having the largest and most powerful fleet. Scholars consider it the single most influential book in naval strategy. ( Wikipedia)

  1. Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/13529

  2. Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

  3. The reader will record the following at the beginning and end of each file:
No more than 0.5 to 1 second of silence at the beginning of the recording!
    START of recording (Intro):
    • "Chapter [number] of The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783. This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, or to volunteer, please visit: librivox DOT org"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Say:
" The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 by Alfred Thayer Mahan. [Chapter]"

For the second and all subsequent sections, you may optionally use the shortened form of this intro disclaimer:
    • "Chapter [number] of The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 by Alfred Thayer Mahan. This LibriVox recording is in the Public Domain."
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • Only if applicable, say:
      "[Chapter title]"

    END of recording:
    • At the end of the section, say:
      "End of [Chapter]"
    • If you wish, say:
"Recording by [your name], [city, your blog, podcast, web address]"
    • At the end of the book, say (in addition):
"End of The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783 by Alfred Thayer Mahan. "

There should be 5 seconds silence at the end of the recording, or 10 seconds for files longer than 30 minutes.

  4. Example filename seapower_##_mahan_128kb.mp3 (all lower-case) where ## is the section number (e.g. seapower_01_mahan_128kb.mp3)

  5. Transfer of files (completed recordings)
Please always post in this forum thread when you've sent a file. Also, post the length of the recording (file duration: mm:ss) together with the link.
    • Upload your file with the LibriVox Uploader: https://librivox.org/login/uploader

(If you have trouble reading the image above, please message an admin)
    • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: maryannspiegel
    • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.

Welcome to LibriVox! Before starting a solo project, we highly recommend that all readers submit a one-minute test (info here), to make sure all your technical specifications are in order. It's also a good idea to submit at least one recording to a collaborative project (perhaps a short story to one of the collections in the Readers Wanted Short Works forum), just to get an idea of the amount of work it will take.

This work is 198,000 words. It's a MASSIVE project! You're talking over 22 hours of finished recording. This is a beast for a first solo. It'll probably take you over a year to finish, working at a good clip. Are you really up for this?

Thanks for the welcome!

Don't think it'll be a problem even reading Mahan's somewhat ponderous prose style.

Have good equipment. Done radio work in the past and host an internet radio show.

However, if I run into issues, I'll scream for help.

That's great to hear Eagle. The 1 minute test should be a breeze given your experience. Please do that next . . .

Hi again :) -- I'll be happy to MC this for you. I will repeat Tricia's caution, though, that it's a good idea to record a few shorter things for us first if your previous experience hasn't included editing your own recordings. That can be a long and tedious job.

If you do decide to dive straight in with this project, you can upload your first file to my folder whenever you have it ready, and then post the link here in the thread. Then I'll set up your Magic Window and send you instructions on how to manage it. I'll need to know the number of files before I set it up. This number can be changed later, so an estimate is OK. The length of each file is up to you, although we do ask that they be no longer than 72 minutes since that's about what will fit on an audio CD.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Great!

Look forward to working with you.

I'm playing with Audible to develop a skill set. I still haven't decided on the direct plunge or a toe in the water approach as suggested.

However, since you offered, when I do have questions, I'll be pinging you.

Thanks!

Mark

Do you mean Audible, the audiobook company, or Audacity? No matter -- I'll be here whenever you need help! And don't worry too much about perfection (the enemy of the good). It's easy to get caught up in trying to get everything technically right, but recording actual books is the fun part. A lot of us have used the Weekly or Short Poetries (in the Short Works forum) as our "tests" as we worked out our recording strategies. That's a good way to get used to the process and still have something that can go into the catalog.

I've moved your thread to Going Solo. I'll send you a PM with the link so you can find it again since this is your first solo.

It began with "aud" and the fingers took over while the brain went out to lunch.

Audacity!

Great! I've set up your Magic Window and entered your reader information in our database. I didn't have the total number of sections you'd need, so I have given you 15 to start with. You can add more at any time.

Please note that your recording software automatically appends ".mp3" to the ends of the filenames, so you don't need to add that yourself. I have removed the extra ".mp3" from your file in the uploader directory (I can do that without having to reupload the file). Also, I amended your top post to indicate that ID tags aren't needed -- that's a new-ish feature that has not made it to the project template. It doesn't hurt anything for you to add the tags, but the cataloging software now does it automatically and, in fact, overwrites anything you have entered yourself. I should have changed it in your post earlier but I forgot.

I'll be sending you a PM with instructions on how to log into the Workflow and manage your Magic Window. I've entered your first file for you so you can see where everything goes.

Now you need a proof-listener! I'll post an ad for you; you can do it yourself for future projects, if you like. Anyone interested in PL'ing will post in this thread. I usually wait for soloists to give the OK before I enter someone as official DPL.

Let me know if you need anything else!

Mark, I owe you an apology -- I just realized I didn't post the Listeners ad last weekend. My only excuse is that it was a busy weekend with work and other things, and it slipped my mind. Anyway, I have now posted the ad and added a tilde (~) to the title of this thread; this is our signal to people looking over the forum that a project needs a prooflistener. Now that prospective PL'ers know that your book exists, you should have someone soon!

Mark,

Excellent reading! I have PL'd the preface - it needs "end of preface" and 5 seconds of silence at the end, otherwise, it is pl ok.

And just a note for the future, I hear many mouse clicks throughout the file - which I assume are you paging down as you read. You might want to move the mouse away from the microphone a bit - or use the page down key.

MaryAnn

Do I load up my "fixed" version in the same way as before?
