NDunn wrote: May 7th, 2021, 9:34 pmI have become very interested in World War I over the last several years, so this project is right up my alley for my first LibriVox recording! I'd like to claim section 59, "The escape of a merchantsman (1914), by Edward Noble", please.
Hello Nathan, and the same warm welcome to the forum for you. :) Great to have started with the test  so yes you are all ready to roll.

Update: Jim has relinquished his prior claim to you, so I was able to assign you Section 59. And here is your reader page: https://librivox.org/reader/16194. If you want another reader name, let me know and I'll change it.

Also please read carefully through the first two posts for more details about how to correctly speak the intro and title and footnotes and how to name your file correctly.

I would be happy to get to know your narrative voice. :D

Sonia
Whoops! I didn't see his claim on it. Thanks Jim, for letting me squeeze in there.

Sonia, could you please make my reader page reflect my real name, Nathan Dunn? Thank you!

yes it's always safe to read a few posts previous just to make sure the Magic Window has been updated with all the claims. As it is first come first served, the prior claim would get honoured and double work may be lost :( that's why it's always good to wait for the claim's registration before starting to record. ;)

But we're all settled now, you can start recording. Have fun !

sure, here it is updated: https://librivox.org/reader/16194

see you around

Here is Section 60--at least they had internal means of locomotion. I recorded a History of Naval Warfare, earlier naval warfare, where the ships were dependent on the wind. That made for some funny business.

Here is Section 73. I figured I would finish up my claims. No hurry, please. I fear this may be tedious, but I felt that it should be read slowly. Jim :)

wow, thank you for all of these, Jim. Quite interesting sections. The hospital diary of the nurse was very emotional :( It must have been hard working all day in that misery and death.

All three sections PL ok right away :) thanks !

and another PL ok section, thank you for the final instalment of Kitchener's Mob, April. It was really an interesting insight into trench-life.

Interesting. I wonder how young he may have been...
He seems to have been just 18 when he joined. We have his letters as LV project already catalogued: https://librivox.org/war-flying-by-a-pilot-by-lessel-finer-hutcheon/ and in the preface they say:
"Theta was born in May 1897; the War broke out in August 1914. On his eighteenth birthday Theta decided that it was time to get a move on. His ambition from the first had been to enter the Royal Flying Corps. This was opposed chiefly because of his youth and seeming immaturity and the excessive danger attached to training. But fate, impelled by inclination, proved too strong. He had been a member of his O.T.C. for four years, and had attended camps at Aldershot and Salisbury Plain; but he deliberately set his face against “foot-slogging.” He urged that though he was old enough to risk his own life he was not old enough to risk the lives of others—his seniors—by accepting an infantry commission."
Well, he was clever in a way, since the trenches were a much harder and more dangerous job than being up in the air, in my opinion.

Excellently narrated and perfectly PL ok, thank you, Availle. :)

wow, Alan, this was a fast return, thank you so much. And your reading was excellent and interesting to listen to. Great diction, agreeable pacing, clear speech. It sounds as if you had fun recording. And word-perfect, so I can absolutely mark this as PL ok right away. Congrats on your first official LV recording. Hopefully many more to come.

Only thing you need to watch out for is the ending silence, which should be a standard 5 seconds. Yours is a bit over 6, this is ok, as there are no other errors, we won't be too picky, no need to reupload this time, but please don't let it get any longer ;)

I checked out the ending of the Emden, as the author was a bit vague here  wikipedia has a good article on it and I was surprised to see how small the ship was. I would have expected something huge somehow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Emden

Section 71 - Air Battle

https://librivox.org/uploads/kitty/worldstory15_71_dresser_128kb.mp3
8.40

This sounds to me more like wartime propaganda fiction than a true report, could they really have fought 5 against 27 and come out unscathed :hmm:

I have adopted the US pronunciation of airplane, even though this is supposed to be by a British correspondent, but not the US pronunciation of Lieutenant as these were British officers. :?
