The Quatrains of Omar Kheyyam of Nishapour, by Omar Khayyám (1048 - 1131), translated by John Payne (1842 - 1916)
The title of this collection reads "The quatrains of Omar Kheyyam of Nishapour. Now first completely done into English verse from the Persian, in accordance with the original forms, with a biographical and critical introduction by John Payne. London, "Printed for the Villon Society by private subscription and for private circulation only, 1898."

Poet and translator, John Payne is known today for his translations of Persian classics like The Thousand and One Nights and the poetry of Hafiz. He also published a complete translation of the Decameron.

In the introduction to this collection, which is probably the most extensive English translation of Khayyam's poetry, Payne takes issue with several previous translations. In particular he cites Whinfield's for its lack of poetic merit and Fitzgerald's for the extravagant liberties it takes with the original text. In its search for accuracy, Payne's own translation often features strained verbiage and use of archaic and unfamiliar English vocabulary.

Hi Thomas

Thank you for your interest in this project.

I am still waiting for a meta co-ordinator to set up the project. When this happens the magic window will be created and you will be able to select the sections that you wish to read.

Cheers

Hi Algy,
I'll MC this for you. Joe found this on the IA
https://archive.org/details/Payne_Quatrains/Payne%20-%20Rubaiyat/page/n1/mode/2up
If it is exact, would you mind using it as the source text?
Thanks,
Amy

I'll move you over to Short works. If you'd rather be in Books, let me know.
Thanks!

I wouldn't call this a short work - it will probably run for between three and four hours.

I think that "Books" would be more appropriate.

Hi Algy
I would like to read some of this so can I provisionally claim section 6?
I have a couple of questions:
- I cannot access the text links in MW, it says I have to request access.
- the archive text has a lot of footnotes. Would you want these included?

Hi Alan

I have shared the text for Section 6 with you.

Readers will not be required to read any footnotes.

Thanks Algy
I only know these through the highly popular but extremely dubious version by Edward Fitzgerald. It will be interesting to read a, hopefully, more accurate version :hmm:
I presume you want the number of each quatrain read before it.

Hi Alan

There is no need to read the number of the quatrain - it would only disturb the flow.

Fitzgerald's version is a transformation rather than a translation. I believe that Payne's translation, in spite of its rather tortured syntax, is a more accurate representation of the original.

That being said, the Fitzgerald is fantastic poetry and is great to read. I have recorded it a number of times.
