The Story of Japan by Robert Van Bergen ( - 0).

This project is now complete. All files can be found on our catalog page:
https://librivox.org/the-story-of-japan-by-robert-van-bergen/

R. (Robert) Van Bergen was one of the first Americans to enter Japan after the country opened its borders to foreign visitors following centuries of isolation. He taught English to Japanese aristocrats, eventually becoming Principal of the Nobles' School in Tokyo. This book, which he wrote for young readers during his stay in the country, was first published in 1897. It includes many illustrations.

From the preface: "Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. [...] While the thread of historical events runs throughout this book, many incidents and characteristic stories have been cited to illustrate the manners and customs of the various periods. As the book is designed for children, the stories are clothed in simple form and language, which will, it is hoped, render them attractive to the young mind." (Summary by Kazbek)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/storyjapan01berggoog/page/n8/mode/2up
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

I'll MC this for you - but first I'm going out for a while... ;-)

Edit: Okay, I'm back and we have a MW. However, looking at the text link, we should have more like 40 sections and not 10... Did I do something wrong? :hmm:
Cheers, Ava.

Thank you, Ava! Yes, I low-balled the number of sections, because I can add them, but not remove them. I'll be grouping chapters into 30-40 minute sections, and the actual number will probably come out in the range of 15-20.

Oh, I see.

Honestly, I would go chapter by chapter with this one. I have read a little and the text seems geared to rather small children, so they may have a shorter attention span. Also, the chapters are rather distinct in topics, so a little breather would be adviseable between them; plus it makes for easier ID3 tags in the end.

But it's your project, so I'll let you do the hard work here. I have my eye on a few chapters, I'll have a look at the MW again when it's filled it.
Cheers, Ava.

As a listener, I'm really not a big fan of hearing a different voice and the long disclaimer every few minutes... I'll take the day to think about it a bit more.

I understand that and in general agree with you. But it's for kids, not for their parents

If you're worried about the disclaimer, then maybe go with a solo for this one?

I'm not sure it's really suited for small children. It reads more like a modern pop history book for adults. Do many people listen to our books using technology that doesn't let them pause in the middle of a track?

I don't know what other people listen with. I have my ancient mp3 player and while I can stop in the middle of a track, it is a 50/50 chance that I can start there again if I turn it off over night.

I looked at the text, things like the following don't make me think of "pop culture for adults":
And you will read later how this claim led to many a serious rebellion, and finally to the war with China.

The Japanese must believe that their emperor is a god. They are allowed to believe anything else besides this, and neither the emperor nor the government cares, so long as they remain faithful in that one point.
I have no kids, so I have no idea what age that would be, maybe 10-12-ish? It seems too simple for teenagers even though there are difficult words strewn throughout - but I love the pronunciation guides for the names throughout.

Looking through the text, you may need another textlink because page 26 is shot in the upper half. I didn't go much beyond that, so I'm not sure if there are more.

Okay, I'm shutting up now, this is your project after all. I'm just a simple mind you see; if it's got nice chapters already, why make things complicated and do something else?
Good night! :D

Oh, good catch. On another page a couple of lines are blurry but legible, and this is the only real problem. Can I include a supplementary link to another PD copy in the Notes just for this section? I prefer this version to the other scans at the Archive otherwise.

If we go by the division in the TOC, the average chapter length should be about 2K words, and that's actually not too short even for my tastes. And, yes, the pronunciation guides were a significant motivator for making this a group project. :)

Yes, that's fine. Just take care that you choose the same edition again.
