With Links of Steel by Nicholas Carter ( - ).

All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/with-links-of-steel-by-nicholas-carter/

Nick Carter is a fictional detective who first appeared in 1886 in dime store novels. Over the years, different authors, all taking the nom de plume Nicholas Carter, have penned stories featuring "America's greatest detective". In this adventure, Nick and his sidekicks are on the trail of jewel thieves. ( )
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/14096
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

I am a newbie reader. I do not see any way to claim a section, I would like to claim section 1 and get started on it as soon as this weekend
I read, therefore I am.

That’s how you claim... just post in the thread for the project you are interested in. I will add you to the catalog (that just needs to be done once) and sign you up for section 1. Please be sure to read the first post and ask if you have questions.

Thank you. Just one thing: we need the time (length of file) for validation purposes.
I will prooflisten this morning, so be sure to check back for notes.

Chapter 1

Nice, clear, well-paced reading

Just a couple of things that need fixing:

~6:20 stumble "was it... was the messenger" If you are using Audacity, highlight the bad section and use the scissor tool.

DC offset -- it is about 60. 0 is ideal, but the human ear can't detect it until it gets to about 100. This is an optional but easy fix. One of our admins has made a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gze0qOPea1E&feature=youtu.be

There is some background noise and the file would benefit from noise cleaning. I do this routinely on all my files. Sometimes it needs to be done more than once. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvhqw7zBmEo&feature=youtu.be

Volume: it just scrapes through at 86.1dB. The goal is 89 but we accept 86-92dB. Once you have completed the noise cleaning, the volume will probably drop out of the acceptable range and the file will need to be amplified https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw

When you have completed these edits, please re-upload with the same file name.

Thank you. Did you edit in Audacity (or your recording program) then re-export?

Chapter 1 -- almost there  but, as I suspected, the volume has dropped below our threshold. If you are unable to amplify by about 5dB, you might need to apply the compressor effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJ3lOTDsN6c

I got audacity and thought I had amplified the file. Is there any way for me to check the volume after I try again?

Absolutely... I didn't want to overload you with too much information at once 8-) We have our Checker program, which checks for volume, stereo/mono, DC Offset, clipping and other technical issues. It is free, safe and easy to use. https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Checker

You will see it also tells you about background noise. This isn't something we give a numerical value... it's more a case of if we can hear it. It seems like a value of 24-30 hits the sweet spot, and you may find some newer prooflisteners will go by this number.

The checker doesn't work on my Chromebook (it's kind of limited).
I tried amplifying it again and uploaded the result. The new link is
https://librivox.org/uploads/lynnet/linksofsteel_01_carter_128kb_(2).mp3

Let me know if it's any better

I found a volume booster ap so if the volume is too low (or too high) let me know by how much and I should be able to adjust it

I have adjusted it slightly, so it is now fine. Please note, you should use the same file name -exactly -- each time you upload a file. I have fixed it, so no need to worry now.
