The Caxtons: A Family Picture by Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803 - 1873).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-caxtons-a-family-picture-by-edward-bulwer-lytton/
Published in 1849...

The quiet country life of the family of Austin Caxton is interrupted by a visit to London. There his son Pisistratus is offered the position of secretary to a leader in Parliament. That parliamentarian's wife was loved as a girl by Austin Caxton and his brother; but she had passed them both by to make a marriage better suited to an ambitious woman. By a freak of fate, Pisistratus now falls in love with her daughter Fannie.

A further outline of this story would give no idea of its charm. The mutual affection of the Caxtons is finely indicated, and the gradations of light and shade make a beautiful picture. Never before had Bulwer written with so light a touch and so gentle a humor, and this novel has been called the most brilliant and attractive of productions. His gentle satire of certain phrases of political life was founded, doubtless, on actual experience. (Modified from “Warner's Synopsis of Books Ancient and Modern, Vol. II”, 1910)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    .
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    .
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.

Wonder why this novel is a group project? 197,450 words or thereabouts, or about 22 hours finished recording.

What sadist names their child Pisistratus? And is it pronounced PISS-i-stratus or PYE-si-stratus?

And what sadistic author, failing to anticipate the development of audiobook 150 years later, sticks the narrator with repeating that name over and over?

edit to add: Forvo offers the pronunciation pye-SIS-tri-tus, which I guess is why the mother offers the nickname "Sisty" instead of the obvious....

Ha ha! Yeah, definitely not forward thinking. :)

When I try to suggest a pronunciation, it often doesn't work (people don't see or ignore the suggestion), so I'd say go with whichever. In my mind I pronounced it "Piss-iss-TRA-tiss", but what do I know?

Apparently it's a Greek name. Pie-SIS-tra-tiss or Pih-SIS-tra-tiss.

Sounds like a plan!

So you want to be credited in the catalog as simply "Harold"? Will do! Just so ya know, section 20 will probably be around 40 minutes of finished recording, depending on your reading speed. :)

--- Weezer - I'll add your claim as well. Thanks!

Preface:
PL OK! (Although the file name should have been caxtons_00_bulwer-lytton_128kb, but I'll fix that at cataloging time.) :)

Chapter 1:

1:17 - slight stumble: "or he may have sided with M..Monboddo"

2:44 - "and reduced into a whole by a committee of taste" - in this, "whole" sounds like it has an S at the end.

5:36 - normally I wouldn't mention this, but the word change is so funny, it really should be changed. "the women grouped around him" whereas I heard "the women groped around him"
