Chapter 24
There is a lot of distortion. Is your computer on a table with metal legs? Do you have a fluorescent light (one of the strip ones)? Do you have an aquarium in the room? If so, you might want to reconsider where you record. Alternatively, adding soft furnishings (curtains, cushions, quilts, even a pile of coats) might help.
Over-processing will also distort things, but I don't think that was the case here.
There are also a lot of bumps, which interfere with comprehension... it's almost as if someone is kicking your desk. There are far too many to cut out, without re-recording almost the entire chapter. It is best to re-record the paragraph at the time and edit out the bad part.
Although this section meets the minimum standards for LV, it took a lot of concentration to understand over the background noises and distortion and I had to read along with the text. The reading itself is good, so if you can eliminate those other issues, you will do well.
To salvage this section:
Re-record section from about 14 minutes onwards.
Apply the compressor effect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJ3lOTDsN6c
Select spike (you will see it in your Audacity file at about 3 minutes).
Amplify that one spot to match the rest of the file (I think it was about -7, but experiment a bit) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw
Amplify the entire file by about 5dB
Select end silence and run noise removal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFSg9o37HMw When I was experimenting, I had to run it twice. The line at the end of the file needs to be thin and flat.
Make sure there are 5 seconds of silence at the end (the file currently has 3.5, but you need to re-record that end section, anyway)
These changes will not get rid of the distortion, but will certainly make it easier to understand.
