The Science - History of the Universe Vol. 8: Mathematics by Francis Roth-Wheeler (1876 - 1960).

This project is now complete. All files can be downloaded from the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/the-science-history-of-the-universe-vol-8-by-francis-rolt-wheeler/

Volunteers outside the USA -- Francis Rolt-Wheeler died in 1960. The death date of L. Leland Locke is 1943, Cassius J. Keyser is 1947, while that of Franz Bellinger is unknown. Their work is (possibly) still protected by copyright in places, like Europe, where copyright is author's death plus 70 years, Australia (author's death plus 70 years for authors who died after 1954), and Canada (author's death plus 50 years).
Multi-volume work on science edited by Francis Rolt-Wheeler. The eight volume is on Pure Mathematics written by L. Leland Locke and on Mathematical Applications written by Dr. Franz Bellinger. An introduction was written by Professor Cassius J. Keyser with a special section on the Foundation of Mathematics. The Pure Mathematics section discusses numbers - its conception and calculations, as well as different areas of mathematics - algebra, geometry, trigonometry. The last section goes into the different applications of mathematics. ( Sienna)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/sciencehistoryofv8rolt/page/n9/mode/2up
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

There should be ~5 seconds silence at the end of the recording.

Please remember to check this thread frequently for updates!
  8. AFTER recording
    Need noise-cleaning?
Listen to your file through headphones. If you can hear some constant background noise (hiss/buzz), you may want to clean it up a bit. The latest version of Audacity is recommended for noise-cleaning. See this LibriVox wiki page for a complete guide.

Okay, we're good!
I would suggest that you mention in the "notes" field if there are math equations in a section. The book doesn't seem full of them, but there are some here and there and people should be comfortable reading them.

We also have a list of resources for "How to read math" in our wiki here:
https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=English_Pronunciation_Guides#Mathematical_Equations_and_Notations

And to get us up for a good start, I would like to read the sections on geometry (seems a bit long though?) and the two final sections on machines and aviation.

I'm out all weekend, so I'm not sure when I can catalog #7, but I've seen that it's done and just waiting for me. :D
Cheers, Ava.

Hi there,

Since the MW is up, may I claim section "0", which I assume is the introduction?

Thanks,

Wayne

This looks interesting!
I would like to claim Sections 1 and 2, "Number, Part 1" and part 2 please.

One question; several times on pages 14 and 15 the text directly refers to an illustration (Figure 5) elsewhere the figures can be either ignored or articulated (e.g., "stroke, stroke, stroke, stroke, cross-stroke" for sets of 5, etc.). How would you like that to be read/dealt with?

Thanks!

Sections assigned.
You can omit text references to figures that you cannot describe/read.

For the 22 notation, I think how you describe it should work.

Thanks!

[21:45] That's 2 ten minute units, 1 one minute unit, and 4 ten second units, and 5 one second units.
