TRIUMPHANT DEMOCRACY by Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1919).

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/triumphant-democracy-by-andrew-carnegie/
Subtitled "Fifty Years' March of the Republic," this is steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie's love letter to America, first published in 1886, an impassioned celebration of the development of American business and opportunity, and her working population's unprecedented rise in prosperity, and a call for other nations to follow in America's footsteps. Through simple, direct discussions of the nature of the American character and her labor market, education, religion, industry, art, literature, foreign affairs, legal system and more, Carnegie sets out a case for a brand of conservative democracy he hopes the world will emulate. Carnegie was born in Scotland and emigrated to America as a penniless teenager. His Carnegie Steel Company launched the steel industry in Pittsburgh, which launched the expansion of the railroads, and after its sale to J.P. Morgan, Carnegie devoted his life to philanthropic causes. His charitable organizations built more than 2,500 public libraries around the world, and gave away more than $350 million during his lifetime. ( ~ Michele Fry)

  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/triumphantdemoc00carniala/mode/2up
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: special: I will read along with the text and notate significant discrepancies.

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

This is set up.

One question: in the intro you first have "chapter [number]" but in the outro you have "end of section [number]". Was this an oversight, or do you want the two different wordings (and perhaps two different numbers, depending on if there's more than one section for some chapters)?

M, welcome to the project, you are in for 16 and 17. I recommend you take a few minutes to read the book dedication and preface, which really set the tone for the book!

Michele, I found the book on Google.books in a much-easier-to-read format:

https://books.google.com/books/about/Triumphant_Democracy.html?id=yINCAAAAIAAJ

Would it be possible to read from it instead? The Archive.org version is, as you know, difficult to see and, as far as I have been able to determine, there is no difference in the text.

Thanks,

Joanne
