The Armenian Crisis in Turkey by Frederick Greene (1853 - 1940).

This project is now complete. All files can be found on the catalog page:
https://librivox.org/the-armenian-crisis-in-turkey-by-frederick-davis-greene/

TO THE MEMORY
OF THE
VICTIMS OF THE SASSOUN MASSACRE
1894
I DEDICATE
THIS APPEAL TO THE CIVILIZED WORLD
IN BEHALF OF THEIR RACE AND OF ALL THE
RACES IN TURKEY

The author shows that the case of the subject races in the Ottoman Empire is desperate, that there is no hope of reform from within, and that relief vimust therefore come through the interference of the powers of Europe. Their action depends largely on the support of the public. “Public opinion,” therefore, “must be brought to bear upon this case,” as Mr. Gladstone said in the House of Commons six years ago. Since then there has been added a new chapter of horrors, and the demand for decisive action in the name of our common humanity has become more urgent. The facts furnished by this book ought to arouse such public opinion as will justify and compel prompt and efficient action on the part of the Powers.

The United States need not depart from its long-established foreign policy, but is bound to protect its own honor and the lives and property of its citizens. ( from the preface)
  1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/63335
  5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

A recent addition to gutenberg. There is plenty of information about the Armenian massacres in Turkey in the 18th and 19th century. But it seems that nobody's talking about it - definitely not the Turks... Let's change this, and in a mere 5 hours or so. :D

DPL welcome!

Oh, good! I saw this and put it on my "to do" list, so I'm glad you've got this launched.
I'm full up on DPL projects, but I may be able to read something if I clear some reading space.
On the road again, so delays are possible

May I read section 16?
I believe it is considered an offence in Turkey to write about the massacres particularly the one of 1915. The writer Elif Shafak was taken to court and threatened with imprisonment for writing about it in her excellent novel The Bastard of Istanbul.

Thank you for claiming Alan.
However, this particular section is about censorship of the Armenian press - books and pamphlets - where words like "scripture" were considered too controversial to print...

That's wonderful, thank you! It's difficult subject matter...

Let's stay here for another day or so that people can see what's new before we hide in "Readers Wanted"

Having read the texts more carefully can I take section 15 instead of 16.

Wonderful that we're starting on this interesting book!
Please delete "October 2020" at 0:16. Otherwise the Introduction and Preface are fine.

That's in the "read by in..."? That's my standard intro. I'll leave it.
