Behind the Footlights by Ethel Alec-Tweedie (1862 - 1940).

This project is now complete. All audio files can be found on our catalog page here:

https://librivox.org/behind-the-footlights-by-ethel-tweedie/

In this collection of essays the author gives us an opportunity to peek into the mysterious life of the theatre; she recalls her numerous conversations with and anecdotes about the "stage folk", such as actors, actresses, playwrights, stage directors or managers. However, her portrayal of theatrical life doesn't aim at glamorising the profession and the day-to-day life of those connected with the stage. On the contrary, if there's one overarching theme to her stories it is the repeated assurance that it's a hard and precarious existence, even for those at the top of the profession, let alone those who play minor parts and are rarely mentioned.
  • Text source (only read from this text!): https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/55492
  • Type of proof-listening required (Note: please read the PL FAQ): standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project may be opened up to a group project if a Book Coordinator is found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to see if it can be re-instated).
Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

Hi. I will be your MC for this project. Be back shortly with your MW.

Since this will be your first project as soloist/book coordinator(BC), you will need to set up a password for access to the workflow system so you can enter the information into the section compiler which then appears in the "Magic Window" in the top post. Here are some links to detailed instructions for logging into the system and setting a password the first time, as well as for entering and editing information in the section compiler.

Instructions for BCs and DPLs

A version of the above is also in the LibriVox wiki in case you can't access Google Docs for some reason.

BCs - How to Update the Magic Window

If you have any questions, let me know. I'll leave this thread here in the Launch Pad for a day or so longer before I move it to the Going Solo forum, to see if a DPL (Dedicated Prooflistener) volunteers. Looking forward to working with you.

Hi Jo and Jenn,

Thank you so much! Sorry for my belated reply -- I'm new to these forums and just didn't have my notifications set correctly. This will be my first solo project. I'm very excited to get started, and truly welcome any and all feedback and advice as we go. I'll get started now with the workflow system.

Looking forward to it!

Just uploaded Chapter 1!

File link: https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/behindthefootlights_01_alec-tweedie_128kb.mp3
Duration: 36:05

I hope how I edited the MW is correct? Please let me know if it needs any fixes.

Jo, I realized my first post is missing a lot of info about the book (genres, keywords, etc.). Should I edit??

Thank you!

Hi Teresa,

The MW is fine, but for a solo, you don't really need to add word counts. Simply 36:05 in the notes field will do. Yes, you can edit the first post to add genre and keywords. However, since you hadn't included them in the template, I took the liberty of choosing Nonfiction/Performing Arts as the Genre and adding the following keywords: theater, acting, stage, state production. I'm happy to change these and/or add additional keywords in the database if you wish. We will also need a public domain summary before this is cataloged. Ideally, this will be something you write yourself. :)

I love your reading style and the voices/accents you do. I think I am going to really enjoy listening to you read this book. Looking forward to hearing more!

Thank you, Jenn!! Looking forward to reading more. FYI, I'm out of town next week, and might not be able to finish another chapter before I leave. So things might be quiet until August, but then I'll keep rolling.

Glad you're back!

Section 2 Note:

Just one minor thing to fix. The volume of the file is coming in at 82.7dB. The accepted range is 86-92dB (89 being the ideal) so your file will need to be amplified.

Thanks, Jenn! Here's Chapter 3...

File:
https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/behindthefootlights_03_alec-tweedie_128kb.mp3
Duration: 46:11

These last two chapters were pretty long, so I was starting to wonder if I should cut them in half... But I'm noticing later chapters aren't nearly as long. For now I'll keep going with a chapter as a section.

Thank you! - T.
