Memoirs of the Distinguished Men of Science of Great Britain Living in the Years 1807-8 by William Walker Jr ( - ).

The early nineteenth century was a period of great discovery and advancements in science. Here we have a snapshot of some of those whose names have gone down in history, such as Brunel, Congreve, Davy, Telford and Jenner, along with some of those who made less of an indelible mark, but who were, nonetheless, pioneers of their time. ( Lynne Thompson)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/56648
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Can I get you started on this by claiming Dalton and Priestly? (sections 15 & 56)

Thanks Lynne. At the beginning, the text says, "SIR JOSEPH BANKS, BART., C.B., P.R.S." Would you like me to read real words instead of the abbreviations (SIR JOSEPH BANKS, Baronet., Knight Grand Cross, President of the Royal Society)?

Yes please! I know, a bit of a mouthful, but just giving the initials may leave listeners wondering.

Okay - consider it done. I don't know how you get Knight Grand Cross from C.B., but that's what I found it stands for, Most Honourable Order of the Bath and all that. :hmm:

More questions - at the end of the section there are some bibliographic references. Should those be included? My preference is to delete them.

And at the very end, should I say "End of Chapter 4" or "End of Sir Joseph Banks" (which sounds rather fatal).

Sorry to be a problem child this morning

Hmmm... my initial thought was that they should be included, but I certainly see an argument against that. So yes, omit them. End of section or end of chapter will work... as for “end of Sir...”... well, I’m pretty sure they are all dead :hmm:

Oh, how interesting!

Could I do
11 - Cavendish
23 - Herschel (*)
39 - Benjamin Thompson
42 - Earl Stanhope (*)
50 - James Watt

Sorry for being greedy... If 5 is too much in one go, the two with (*) will do for starters.
Thank you!
Cheers, Ava.
