Cambridge Medieval History, Volume 1 by J. B. Bury

Volume 1: The Christian Roman Empire and the Foundation of the Teutonic Kingdoms "The present work is intended as a comprehensive account of medieval times, drawn up on the same lines as The Cambridge Modern History but with a few improvements of detail suggested by experience. It is intended partly for the general reader, as a clear and, as far as possible, interesting narrative; partly for the student, as a summary of ascertained facts, with indications (not discussions) of disputed points; partly as a book of reference, containing all that can reasonably be required in a comprehensive work of general history." (From the General Preface) ( KevinS)
    1. How to claim a part, and "how it all works" here To find a section to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are "up for grabs." Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which section you would like to read (include the section number from the left-most column in the reader list, please). Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
    2. New to recording? Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
    3. Is there a deadline? We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim. Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it'll go back to the pool. There's no shame in this; we're all volunteers and things happen. Please do not sign up for more sections than you can complete within the two month deadline.
    4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): https://archive.org/details/cambridgemedieva009698mbp/page/n9/mode/1up
    5. Please claim sections (the numbers in the first column below)! If this is your first recording, please let me know under which name or pseudonym you'd like to appear in the LibriVox catalogue. We can also link to a personal website/blog.

Prospective Prooflisteners: Please read the Listeners Wanted FAQ before listening! Level of prooflistening requested: standard

Please don't download or listen to files belonging to projects in process (unless you are the BC or PL). Our servers are not set up to handle the greater volume of traffic. Please wait until the project has been completed. Thanks!

      • You'll need to select the MC, which for this project is: Leni
      • When your upload is complete, you will receive a link - please post it in this thread.
      • If this doesn't work, or you have questions, please check our How To Send Your Recording wiki page.

      Any questions?
      Please post below
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: Most chapters are divided into two or more sections. Please read the chapter title for each section. To simplify matters, we will not be reading a chapter's topics as they are not clearly marked in the text.

Additionally, footnotes are optional and their use is left to the reader's discretion. Please do not place a footnote that points to a reference rather than provides an explanation or further helpful facts.

Finally, if you have claimed an entire chapter, please identify your section breaks in the project's thread so our DPL will understand and be able to follow your recordings properly.

Finally 2: If you find any poor scans, please let me know. I'm sure I can find another scan of the page somewhere.

Leni, please see if all this is acceptable to you. I have tried to simplify things as best as I can. I think all will be made clear enough once I can fill in the MW.

As for the author of the volume, I have used the name of the scholar who was the 'architect' of the series. I think there were three actual editors and, of course, each chapter has its own author. I try to give the author the credit in the intros.

That would be wonderful! Thank you! We'll have to be lenient with many of the pronunciations, but that is what is expected with a 'standard' PL anyway. I know I have trouble with many of the names and places!

I hope I'm not jumping the gun here... but could I please claim the Intro, Preface, and chapters 1-4? If the quarantine keeps getting prolonged, I'm sure I'll have more than enough time to finish

Elijah! Glad to have you aboard. Let me get the MW set up and we'll decide then what's what. (All I know is that I started what I think will be Section 1, so THAT ONE'S MINE!)

There will be a Section Zero. And do you understand that each chapter is about 90 minutes long? Yes, really!

We'll wait a bit, my friend.

archive.org is down for maintenance. I'll have to wait to get the MW finished.

Please hold off before making any claims. (I think I did offer Section Zero to ej400, though.)

I'll note here when we are ready for claims.

I haven't worked everything out just yet, but why don't you take 0 and 4-6 for now. 4-6 will give you a whole chapter and you can divide it up however you'd like, trying to keep the sections below 40 minutes when possible. I'm guessing that 4-6 will take about 108 minutes in total.

I think that's what I would like to do and, ideally, folks will do a chapter at a time. That wouldn't be a requirement though. I just have to make the proper breaks and document them in the MW still. That will take up some time tomorrow, I imagine.

That's totally understandable. I don't mind one bit. That's actually probably a good idea though, to have people claim a chapter or maybe two at a time because honestly, 108 minutes are like 3 or 4 chapters in one. I didn't think of that before. You probably saved my life Kevin  Here I'm thinking, "yup, 108 minute chapters... if I take 4 chapters that's like 400 minutes so about 4 hours...." obviously I wasn't doing any math to amount to that much  Now I'm embarrassed   It's been a long day
